l looked at an LJ XU-1 built 5/72 this week that has the front gaurd cut-outs introduced by Holden as a crude form of controlling deformation in a head on smash. l was always under the impression these were introduced in 73. Should they be on a 5/72 Brisbane built car?

Cheers

Hi Mondie

I agree, AFAIK they were introduced in early 1973. I've never seen an original '72 body with them.

By the way it's not only XU-1s, it's all LJ 6 cyl that have them.

Guys,

Will post pics soon. The car in question appeared to be in original unrestored condition and is being sold as such. l am not familiar with all the other differences from 72 to 73 so cant be sure there, didnt think to check for the double skinned transmission tunnel. Plates have never been off the car, chassis stamping looked ok. Original spot welds on all inner and outer gaurds, radiator support etc. Thats why it threw me

Hi all

2600S - Note the notch near the hinge - there's also another one on the other guard.

73 cars should, 72 cars dont. l am trying to find out the approximate date this 'feature' was started by Holden as l dont believe they should be on a 5/72 car

Hi Mondie,
I have an original 6/72 that does not have them, the 73 does.
I think they were introduced in early 73, if the guards look like they have not been replaced, look underneath the front guards approx. directly bellow pedals.
The 73's have an extra brace there to help reduce flex.
I have seen guards replaced by good panel beaters and you can not tell, spot
welds are perfect.
Cheers.

Thanks Tangey, it seems beyond doubt that something is up with the car in question. Either that or some concientous owner cut them in themslves, obviously unlikely. l never thought to check for the extra bracing. l guess after 5 mins l had decided the car wasnt for me so did not get too carried away with checking it out but these cut-outs did leave me wondering.

Cheers

Genuine guard on ebay seems to have the cut out you guys are talking about.

It's a genuine replacement part, so maybe the car in question had a ding and replaced with a genuine part.

check it out.
