hey guys,

attempted to change lifters today, to get rid of the noise, got rid of the big TICK TICK, but now ive replaced it with little tick ticks, guess i didnt prime the lifters well enough! ah well, itll get done again soon enough with some new bits.

what i wanted to ask, was do these heads look stock? the ports measure 4.8cm x 2.8cm. they look bigger than normal to me! nice and smooth too.

any ideas?

cant remember port sizes off hand but if you say their bigger then their bigger, smooth is not good for carb fuel attomisation.
looks like some match porting has been performed.
looks like a long time between oil changes and are you running inhibitor, the water jackets look rusty.
who was the rocker gear for wear?

well theyre not mirror smooth, but theyre not rough.

i know the engine is dirty as, ive only had it a week, has been sitting previously for a few months, it will get looked after now. the rocker gear doesnt look too bad, though i did find one bent pushrod. will keep working on it next weekend!

though i did find one bent pushrod.

you better find the cause of that as they dont bend easy under normal conditions.
that would be your "ticking" problem.
closly examine the rockers esp. the one from the bent rod and replace both rockers and fulcrums if suspect.
while you got it in that state, can you slide any lifters out, if you do, put them back where they came from. if you cant, their mushroomed (read worn).

Not being smart but does it really matter ? ported or not .. you will find out if you ever rip them off to go better anyway .

Eitherway better adjust that throttle cable looks a bit slack... i love the look of standard engine bays .)

well buying this engine, that i really dont know much about, yeh it kinda does matter, id like to know whats been done to it, and if taking a picture and giving you guys measurements to check against to find out is wrong, then what is this forum for?

id like just like someone to measure a set of standard heads for me, or even just let me know if they look a bit bigger!!

i could be wrong but they look like blue motor heads with standard springs and retainers. good for about 5500rpm or six max.
slack in the cable is not as important as is getting WOT when the pedal hits the metal.
i will measure some for you next week if no one comes forth in the mean time.

If the ports in a 253 head are the same, I'll measure mine within 24 hours, I hope.

pretty sure thier the same.
be accurate with the measurements as there will only be about 1.5mm width and 3mm height difference and compair your measure points to allow for match porting.

This is the best I can do at the moment, Yella Terra Stage 3 heads (apologies forumers, I know the pic has been posted 1,000 times before):-

They are on the car, so can't measure those. If your still stuck for measurements, let us know, have six 308 heads, and one L34 head in the shed.

Sorry, that pic only shows exhaust ports. Don't have any on Photobucket showing the inlets sorry.

they appear to be standard heads going by choppers quote but as stated prev. they appear to have been match ported at some stage.
match porting just concerns the port opening and does not extend into the port "tunnel" itself.
match porting is done to to achieve a uniform step at the port face to the manifold.

so they are black heads eh, probable the best of the standard heads from holden, standard large valve (L34 type).

Yella if you wouldnt mind id like the L34 inlet and exhaust measurements, also if one of you could measure across the widest part of the combustion chamber.
cheers.

Can do. Need to also measure the valve widths on the L34 head. They are only about 20% bigger than normal valves. The Y/T valves are 50% bigger than standard. If your lucky might even do some pics of the one and only head (not a pair damn it). The L34 head has very minimal change to the combustion chamber on the standard head, unlike the Y/T's pictured above.

Don't believe there is any port work whatsoever on the L34 head, but will provide measurements so we know for sure. Even on the Y/T heads, port work is minimal, just remove the sharp casting edge in the ports, and that's about it.

Can't measure the Y/T heads anymore sorry, bolted on the car.

Std 253/308 int valves: 1.75"
L34/YT stage 3/Brock heads/V5H/VN std: 1.94"
YT -9/-11 etc: cut for 2.02", can run 2.08" (but no point on 4.00" bore)
