A while back I did a photo chop of Welby's A9X to make
it look like a cop car.

I am guessing, with cars like the XU1, SLR and SS, that these would
have been used as pursuit cars by some of the forces?

I have seen the Chargers, Monaros and GTs, but not a Torana?

Any one got a pic of one?

- Mick?

Cheers, Leakey

I know the NSW cars were unmarked and standard looking except for driving lights, sunvisors and aerials.
If they looked like GTRs but had the front air dam, Then they were XU1 spec.
This following link may help with a few NSW cars.
Some interesting police Drag cars from some of the other states too.
I think Barry (LC70GTR) also has some pics.
John.

Yeah have read through a couple of my old mans police statements from back in the day... got shot at by a gtr driving police officer... hilarious when its your dad hahahaha! and he has no criminal record either, cop was sent to the bush :) He said his little mini cooper s pissed on it through the tight corners only to be caught on the main roads...

I have never seen a torana cop car before, but my old man owns the GTO Coupe that was lent to the victorian police by HSV a couple of years ago.
It obviously doesn't have the signs or lights on it now :)

might be worth a bit one day ?

You'd reckon they were about. I can remember seeing Cordia Turbos,
currently WRX's so the forces definately used hi spec cars.

An SS. Must have been one. Good security in the back!!! LOL

C'mon Mick, you must have some inside info?

The silver GTR was based in Tarcutta and the car used to be serviced at my dad's garage at times. In those days there was no such thing as radar and the speed limit wad D restricted which meant it was more or less open slather. The only way used to check speed in those days was by following the speeding car and checking it against the specially calibrated police special speedo's which were calibrated monthly (in wagga wagga) for this area.

As a matter of interest the bloke role playing the baddie being booked ended up being a Chief Superintendent in charge of Police communications and was my boss towards the end of my career.

I could go on for hours about the good ol days....

Sorry Leakey I haven't got any photo's of old police cars, was too busy catching bad guys back then

But as Scooter and many of us know, the NSW Police had their fair share of GTR's and XU1's, would love to have one of those now.

Cheers Mick.

Hi Leakey,

I have an ex police pursuit (chaser) gtr and thought you might be interested in some further details I have. The history of my car as I have been told is as follows:

Operated by the Gosford Highway Patrol
Bought by one of the police officers when it finished its "duty"
The Police Officer sold it to his brother who was a fireman at the Cooke Hill fire station
The car died at some stage and sat in their mothers driveway
A gentleman by the name of Don Gambrill (Singleton, NSW) saw it in the driveway and bought it from the fireman in the early 90's (he is the one who provided the history to me). Don restored it in about 1995. During the conversation I had with him he indicated he welded up a number of holes in the dash under the radio plate where the police had their gear mounted. He sold it in about 2000 to a young bloke in Woy Woy who I bought the car from.

I have spoken with a guy in melbourne, Vin Roberts who gave me some methods for id'ing police cars. He has an orchid metallic XU1. I have found where the police id plate was mounted (evidently they removed them when they were disposed of).

My car is a Juniper coloured GTR built in 03/73. I believe it may have been originally delivered by Glen Fulton Motors. I am in the process of rebuilding it mechanically and have found that it has an XU1 gearbox in it (with the 899 cluster etc) and some of the other XU1 type tell tales.

830HP indicated someone he knows remembers the car operating out of Casino.

Cheers,
JuniperGTR

Hey Juniper.

Mate can you tell me where they put this plate you are talking about
or give me a general area to look in. Are there any other tell tales to look for?

Hi vin150cars,

Not really sure, but I believe was Glen Fulton Motors in Lakemba.

Do you have the records to be able to check, ie against a VIN?

JuniperGTR.
