Hi Balfizar - Balmoral Vic is a small western Vic town that had a population of 328 according to the 2011 census. During 1969 through to the end of Dec 1971, dealer code 310 is recorded as having sold approx.110 LC Toranas This was an OCR count of the VIN disc so the total was probably more than that. On this basis I don't believe that a GMH dealer in Balmoral Vic could be dealer 310.

 

During 1972 and 1973 sales recorded against dealer code 310 only amounted to around 24 vehicles.It would be hard to accept that Watsons of Greensborough Vic only sold around 24 LJ Toranas in 2 years after having sold around 205 LCs. I have Watsons of Greensborough recorded as dealer 442 beginning with the earlier days of A B Watson P/L. I believe that dealer code 310 relates to Cheney Motors P/L (Dandenong), Langhorne St Dandenong Vic. Interestingly this dealer disappeared from from phonebooks and owners handbooks at the end on 1971.

Thanks for that headsup Bazza,  I agree it had to have been a re-issue.   Cheney Motors (Dandenong) from 1966 would have had an re-issued/issue D/CD and had a re-issue when it became Patterson-Cheney Dandenong.  The VIN disc says 310 starts with a "C" in 1969.  So does the D/CD timeline go like this?  Cheney Dandenong get an originally re-issued  D/CD in 1966 - of 310 and should have got a re-issue D/Cd (436)after the merger with Pattersons.  436 starts with a "P" or none of the above!   Or is 310 "C"heney Fawkner and 436 "P"atterson Cheney Dandenong.

I have had Preston Motors (Malvern) down as dealer 436 for some time. Patterson Cheney of Dandenong was only getting started around April '73 when code 436 ceased.

I am going to have to get a "complete set of owners manuals for this period.

I do have Preston Motors @ Malvern  from 1957 to 1970(advertising /owners manuals)

I do have Preston Motors (Malvern) @ Armadale in Sept 1971  owners manuals    (Preston Motors (Malvern) @ Armadale is in the July 1971 Sales results)

The Malvern/Armadale change was just a suburb name change - same location/address

I do have 436 selling LC 344 LJ 124 (but they don't appear in any sales figures I Have until 1971)

Here is the kicker, Preston Motors (Malvern) an original 1962 dealer listed would have been allocated a sequential/alphabetical D/CD,  "M" for Malvern would have put them much higher than 436.

            Further to the Preston Motors Malvern:-

1936 to 1952 - 3 adds only for used cars.

Only in owners handbook '66, 67, 68

Had 3 street addresses in High street Malvern :- street No (177 used 1936),(1174 -1960 to 1970), (1240 Used 1956)

Does not appear in GMH sales figurers until 1971 as Armadale.

 

I am starting to think #436 could be Preston Motors Footscray (1967 - 1978) - but that will take more research.

Somebody has already reported Preston Motors P/L 435 Barlky St Footscray Vic as being code 301 a number of years ago. There were 81 LCs and 90 LJs sold.

 

FYI here is an anomaly - 307 was Merrell Motors P/L, Caboolture Qld.  (8 LC 16 LJ) This was confirmed from original paperwork of H287005.

That's very low numbers for a large Metro dealer.  And 301 is also an original VIC country alpha / numeric sequence number.

301 Courtney's @Alexandra fits (1936 - 1977) would have had the original number issued and kept it until the end in 1977 and  is in sales figures up to 1977  so that clashes with Prestons Footscray (1967 - 1978).

YEP, a VIC  country number re-issued to QLD (Ipswich) (LC 39 - LJ 150) when from Zupps - to Merrells in 1970.  interestingly Graham Merrell still kept the Zupps (Whale) logo.

 

Sometimes I think these D/CD's are a moving target.  Thinking that you have confirmed a new number often creates a huge amount of shuffling of numbers from previous "solidly" held beliefs. Ha!

 

If it was easy everybody would be doing it.

 

The only good thing is I haven't found a new GMH dealer Post 1962 for years.  That's a good starting point.

Back in the 70's & 80's I believe 494 was Beazley & Bruce in Canberra, but my notes say it was later issued to John Wright Holden, although I'm not sure exactly when.
