Even AMC makes mistakes !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Issue 15 Page 118 AUSTRALIAN MUSCLE CAR magazine ( By The Numbers )

H289651 - H291062 85 examples
L251090 - L252674 66 examples ( 85 + 66 = 151 )

I once wrote to AMC asking them for help in tracking down the pink things history but just got fogged off. A mate who owns the geissler L34 wrote to them once to asking for help in tracking down its history and only got fogged off to. YES, im a little angry at them !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! But hey they still produce one of the finest magazines in the world ( Even though they do make a few little mistakes from time to time ) and the Australian Muscle Car Nationals is the greatest show on the face of this planet !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ay George, dont always believe what you read in books and magazines !!!!!!!!!
( That extra 50 grands not looking good ) Im OUT.

Tuesday 29-8-72 CAMS gives the go ahead. For the production of the 1972 Bathurst LJ GTR XU-1. ( Fiv book, page 191 )

Fly again,

I think you might be misinterpreting what this line means, Cams was acknowledging on the 29th of August 1972 the fact that GMH had submitted the paperwork to tell them that the production run of Bathurst XU 1s had begun. It doesn't mean that the 29th was the day that GMH started the Bathurst run.

Also bear in mind that the Bathurst cars needed to be homologated by mid September to be eligible to enter the Sandown enduro which is the traditional lead up to Bathurst.

After a bit of research I think the Bathurst cars were probably made somewhere in the range of H243361 - H250907 for Brisbane and L210096 - L216000 for Adelaide. I think the run may have started around the middle of August.

Im sure you meant the start of the Man Champ series which started on Sunday
27-8-1972.

Amendment 1/1V 1/7/1972 - Final drive. Variation in supplier. May be either
" Borg Warner Limited slip " or " Detroit No Spin "

Im sure the first batch ( 200 ) July, August, 1972 were also going to become the XU-2,s with the second batch begining September 1972. These 'specials within a special' were sold as ordinary XU-1,s.

Fly again,

This is what I have been told on a number of occasions but in my opinion I don't think this is exactly right. A few years ago I had a very close look at two unmolested standard XU1s from the Brisbane plant, they were both eighth month and they were made four days apart, one was definitely not a Bathurst car while the other looked very much like it was. The one I thought was a Bathurst car was also a one owner vehicle.

In my opinion I think it is unlikely that all cars that came out of Adelaide and Brisbane in August and September of 1972 are Bathurst cars. GMH may have put 200 sets of Sprintmaster wheels on XU1s produced during this time as they already had those wheels left over from the ill-fated V8 XU1 programme but whether all the other mods made it onto those 200 cars I think it is debatable. This is my opinion only but GMH had been known to fudge the figures on more than one occasion before and after, you only have to look at the A9X production figures to see what I mean.

Could anyone clarify the final drive ratio of BIG B 72 XU1's. In Fivs book it state 3.36:1 L.S.D with options of 3.08:1 and 3.55:1 L.S.D . Does this mean that any one of the 3 with the other improvements is classified as a Big B 72 XU1.

The reason I ask is the general concensus seems to favour the 3.55:1 LSD as being the definitive Big B 72 XU1, whereas the facts seem to tell another story

Bear with me Fly...It's all new to me. So the homologation 72 Xu1's which carry the title Bathurst Specials did in fact have the option of either of the 3 diff ratios and depending on what option you took they are entitled to carry the mantle of Bathurst XU1's.

So now I can be reasonably authoritative when someone bags my 3.36:1 as not being a real Bathurst Special...appreciate your responding Fly...cheers :spoton:

And concerning identifiable tips re: Specials. This was submitted by LC/LJ NUT of Melbourne in May 2003 on this very forum.

Run hand under lip of guards. The Bathurst models have had the edge lipped up to accomodate wider tyres..both front and back.

Lift the bonnet and check the welds up the gutters on the side. The Specials have a heavily spot welded shell for strength.

May Help!!
