L216000 (250)

Adelaide :

(49-50) of these cars were earmarked for export

I do often wonder what happened to those 200 V8 LJ shells ? Something very, very, very strange happened at the Adelaide plant in the months of August, September & October. Brisbane on the other hand continued running smooth as silk.

Were the V8 LJ,s going to be built at the Adelaide plant ?

There were NEVER any v8 lj bodies in 72, thats a bedtime story, the only bodies capabable of coping with the stress of a v8 were the late 72 /73 with reinforced trans tunnels/front floor pan /chassis bracing, ect by this time the lj v8 project started by harry was well and truly dead.i think issue is getting a bit thrashed and the disc reading is getting boring. daz

There were 200 9/72 plated cars built to homologate the cam, springs & flywheel
( JP216 to JP222 )

thats only 6 !!

has anyone ever pulled down an engine for the first time for rebuild and taken notice of the camshaft prefix , ie was it XH ? from one of these 72 build dates fly is qoting ?

Hi

Indeed - something strange was going on - some cars finished weeks after their "siblings". I have no idea - but this is what it looks like graphically.

hi bazz ,there was nothing strange going on ,the adelaide plant got a lot of fleet/goverment orders which took precedence over the domestic orders, the company looks after the big spender first ,and this causes breaks in the run, hence the catchup, and gaps in the disc vin nos, no mystery, just buisness.cheers daz :D

I thought that the 72 bathurst xu1's had the 2 piece headers as previous xu1s, But today i was talking to a owner that purchased a new 72 bathurst and said it came out with extractors.

The extractors look like the same type as in the 73 bathurst cars.

Not likely at all mate, would have been fitted at a later stage. Like the myth of the XA GTs with 4 bolt mains ...

nothing funny about "FLEET ORDER" XU1s as Mike Bell from WAs 8/73 XU1s broadcast sheet shows it as being a FLEET ORDER car.

gtr-xu1 ,you have misunderstood my comment, but that doesnt surpsise me,im fully aware that gtrs/xu1s were occasionaly fleet/gov ordered, cop cars ect,but certainly not in the volume of commercial vehicles, dont you see in your minds eye, the funny side of a stack of commercial xu1s being sent off to a gov dept :tease: .cheers daz :D

this car was featured on both the cover and pages 50-57 in March 2006 No 152 of Australian Classic Cars.

A bit more history in the article.

The Lime Green one.

The truth Fly...As I've said before I brought my car as an investment and if it wasn't for George at Sydney Torana car club i may well have ended up with egg all over the snorer. My first attempt at purchasing a Torry was a 71 LC XU1 which turned out to be anything but. Thankfully I didn't part with any hard earned money.

So all I do is read, listen and then read somemore. I purchased two books when I brought the XU1..Fiv's book and Max Ellery's factory workshop manual and then I went about buying everything and anything that featured information on 72 XU1's.

Re: 4v...well all I can say in my inexperienced way is with the mountains of information that is coming from both the 73 & 72 threads...The chicken may have come before the egg.

I'm indebted to all the posters. Wether I own a toy Big B Xu1 i.e 1v or the real thing..in all honesty I am like a pig in shit just being able to park one in my garage :spoton:

PS..just noticed in my hometown that my car has a litlle brother. A GTR in the same March 17th...not sure it was a GTR coluor but will attempt to get a group photo.
