You got the door off and on a stand? That is easiest, but I've also done them fitted.

if you use silicon spray the channel may move when you wind the window up and down, best to just use the pinch method as described (with a bit of slightly soapy water may help it slip into place) rather than use an oily substance that will soak into the channel material and give you headaches later onI know...its a prick of a job...thinking if I use lots of Silicon spray it might make it easier to slip in the channel..any other suggestions?

Not too sure if it would work in your application or not.
Having said that I do use silicone spray on the new rubbers to assist the door closing easier.
