hey

i managed to get my hands on an original aircon setup for my LX (it out of an LH) all the bits appear to be there but im not sure on the way they go, so if anyone has any photos of a factory fitted aircon setup in an LH/LX then could they please share. this is for a 6 cylinder not v8.

any help greatly appreciated

cheers

The GMH LH Manual has a pretty extensive bit on factory air con. Suggest you get a copy. I know it's there, but never really bothered reading it.

Nup, the reprint of the GMH-Manual has about 30 odd pages just on air-conditioning, including drawings.

lol guess so......

thanks for the pics and info guys

davelh- Noticed from your pics you used the original compressor, do you find it drains a lot of power? as i was considering changing the compressor to one out of a VH commonwhore ( rotary type one, much smaller) or something similar?

cheers

that isnt the original compressor, it is out of and early commodore. the original one is about twice the length. i also have been thinking of changing it to an even smaller one.

Try something like a late model Commodore compressor, but make sure you mount it the same way up as it's mounted in the Commodore as they have an oil sump.

Compressor mounts on the opposite side on a six if you have the original bracket.

There is a suitable Toyota compressor, but not sure of the model #.
When you find out, let me know, so I can put mine back in.

Grant..

You mention it is going on a six, but which LH aircon setup do you have? The one for the 6 or for the 8, they are different. i have the whole 60 page manual (coutersy of another forum member)for the Lh setup, and could eventually scan you the pic you need, but it would help if you clarified the above.

There are two different setups, one is VIR, the other is receiver drier. The VIR setup is the most common for Torana (uncommon for most other cars) and will fit in both six and V8. The picture I supplied is VIR in a V8. The only visual difference is the box under the bonnet, the one pictured fits in both.

There are many differences between the Lh 6 and 8 units, not just the shape of the box, which possibly wont fit in a v8 application. The six unit is not common at all(not like a typical txv and receiver dryer), POAST system and a pic of how the plumbing is setup would be esssential.

In the VIR system, the differences between V8 to 6 are minimal. Lets take a look.
Control panel in dash, identical for both (even the same for VIR and RD)
Heater box, identical, including the wiring (subtle differnces for length etc to cover different mounting of compressor.).
Fibreglass box under bonnet containing Evaporator and VIR unit, identical
Condensor, identical
Compressor, same basic unit bar the fittngs for the hoses.

Differences, the hoses and the bracket for mounting the compressor, thats it.

The Receiver dryer setup is differnt in the fibreglass box area (construction and, evaperator and obviously no VIR unit), and in it's operation, but the other components are the same. The RD unit was only fitted in the 6cylinder, and wasn't very common, most had the VIR setup the same as the V8. It was a very messy ugly box similar to that fitted in the HQ-HZ, and won't fit with a V8.

All the above red is correct, but its how to setup the plumbing of the "poast"(the vir is techically RD as well as is the poast unit) bits that is important though, thats why a pic would be good if thats what indeed lxchamois has , I dont think its too hard to work out where the box goes etc.

Yes, we need to work out what system he actually has. It may turn out, it's not a factory setup. It's really not that complicated, and i have all the pics and info here if i knew what system we are dealing with. The system has one very good feature, you can remove it all (under bonnet gear) without depleating the gas.

I think the unit lxchamois has is the one on ebay that is plumbed thru
existing air plumbing. The fan housing (in engine bay) had a 'T' shape
on the end of it, rather than the straight cowl. It looks like it will only fit
on to a 6 though.

I have the under dash type. I was very interested in that unit too!!!

I came across this unit too, which looks like a hybrid of the two!!
This is in an LX sedan. Its about the 4th pic down.

that one is not factory air. If you note the pics I posted on the first page, you will see the car looks the same inside as a car without air, no extra piping or under dash bits, it all comes out the centre vents.

Is it worth grabbing any bit of the factory aircons' at the wreckers? A wreckers near me has a smashed up housing but the motor, switch panel etc are still there...

I'll grab it the next time I'm there, I spose it's good to have a spare or if someone's got the whole setup apart from one piece... I think the switch handle was even different to the standard switch.

EVERYTHING is different. I'd get the lot if I knew of one around, the aircon harness, brackets, box, hoses etc
