I have just had to replace the shifter on my car as a previous owner had done some dodgey welds which caused it to destroy itself.

I have replaced it with a genuine gmh shifter that I had and am just needing to set it up correctly. I have fitted the linkages and all are fine and able to be adjusted, unlike before. The problem I seem to be having is that when the lever is engaged in first it jumps out of the H pattern and also does the same when in 2nd. It does not do this when in 3rd and also 4th. One thing I have noticed though is that the lever moves alot more to engage in first and second than it does to go into 3rd or 4th.

Can anybody give me some tips on how to set it up correctly ?

Many thanks

Sounds like the 1st/2nd lever on the side of the box is too long to suit this shifter.

does it also crunch into 1st if you do it on the move? i had this problem and it turned out to be some shagged syncros and judging by the shrapnel in the bottom of my gear box there are other things as well

If it's coming out of the gate in 1st and 2nd its over stroking at the box. Is the nut tight that holds the lever onto the side of the box? Is the lever flogged out at the box? Or, the lever is wrong for that shifter.

Have you checked there is enough oil in the box? I have heard that can cause the car to jump out of gears.

The movement for 1st and 2nd is longer just because of the design of the linkages.

I have fiddled with the shifter on M20s so much over the last few years. Ever since i destroyed my Rare Spares shifter about 2 years ago, its had been an ongoing nightmare of trying to fix the shifter and putting mates shifters in, untill i stuck the Celica box in middle of last year. :spoton:

I was taugh when setting up the shifter on the box, first adjust the reverse linkage, so that the reverse gate lines up perfectly with the fixed gate and that when you pull the gear lever back from being in reverse it should pop back into neutral without you having to pull the lever across.

When setting up 1st and 2nd adjust the linkage till the 1st and 2nd gate lines up perfectly with the fixed gate. Then adjust the 3rd and 4th linkage to line up with the 1st and 2nd and the fixed gate. The gear lever should move easily from side to side in the neutral position without moving forwards or backwards to line up with the gates.

Also double check the nuts that hold the linkages on the side of the box are done up tight enough. I had a problem adjusting the 3rd/4th linkage one time and the nut was a little loose.

Good luck with it man. :spoton:

Hi torry nut

For what it is worth, this is how the Gregory's manual explains the process:

"TO ADJUST THE LINKAGE

(1) With the floor shift assembly installed to the vehicle, move the control lever to the neutral position.

(2) Back off the trunnion lock nuts on all 3 transmission shift rods.

(3) Adjust the length of each shift rod so that the front edge of the slot in each lever is aligned with the front edge of the slot in the reverse lock out plate.

(4) When satisfied that the adjustment has been carried out satisfactorily, retighten the trunnion lock nuts on all shift rods.

(5) Move the control lever through all speeds to check for free movement."

After reading your thread, I thought I should have a look at the Commy I am building and see if it can come out of the gate too. Guess what? It does!

http://www.gmh-toran...75

I have 3 shifters here and 1 is different to the other 2 in the way it is set up.
The levers on the side of the box are different lengths and the trunions are in different positions as well as the pivots on the Commy shifters are metal to metal but the odd one has rubber grommets where the links go in to it.

I think I have 1 early shifter LC/LJ and 2 Commy shifters.

Hope this helps

Hi, old thread but does anyone know the thread size on the 3 shift lever points on the Aussie 4 sp. they appear to be a fine thread, but neither 5/16 or 3/8 UNF seems to be it.
