Well for those who dont know (almost everyone :P) I have just picked up an EFI 5L & TH700. So out with the old in with the new I say. The 253 and trimatic are going into my VH Wagon, then thats getting sold (hint hint). And the 5L and trans are going into the torry! FUN FUN FUN :spoton:

The torry is also getting a respray. Im going to attempt to do this myself. And the whole front end is getting rebuilt with some goodies and HQ brakes.

I'll keep you guys updated as the rebuild goes along.

Cheers

Theres not much extra cost involved. Im doing all the work except for cutting the tailshaft down. Got a mate hooking me up with the paint & all that gear. A mate has made up a custom crossmember for me. And my mate that works at Autopro is hooking me up with all the stuff for the front end..

I'm saving a few dollars everywhere, but it still is costing a bit

and this is the VH which donated the 5L to my torry, such a nice commodore to do that. The commo is in pretty good condition but there is a bit of rust on the rear, and the rear bumper is dodgey. Interior is pretty nice. In a couple of days ill put the 253 into it.

Can't half tell which car you like the most!
The torrie gets the shed and a nice tarp.
All the commodore gets is the back-yard and the inverted bonnet! :spoton:

Well today I removed everything from the engine bay and got the old faithful wire brush onto it. Ill get some pics tomorrow. I am going to start rubbing everything back as soon as I buy the sandpaper.. Should have all the paint done in the next 4 weeks hopefully..

I have a bit of welding and bogging to do first though.. Battery tray is #@$^%& so I am going to weld a new sheet in. And I need to weld up a spot where someone cut to fit airdonditioning or something.

Started to do a bit of prepping in the engine bay today. Armed with a wirebrush drill bit, and away I went.. I was mainly trying to get rid of the build up of 30yo dirt.. Did a bit of panel beating with the hammer and cold chisel though. There is a bit of rust where the bonnet hinges go so I attacked that. And everywhere else that needed it. Found a bit of bog on one of the wheel arches so I got rid of that and then whacked out the dent as good as I could. Came up pretty well.

I also removed the charcoal canister holder. Im going to put the battery on that side and use a commodore airbox on the other side.

I forgot to take pictures after I had finished, these ones are only progress. I'll get some tomorrow night.

Well here we go..

The first thing I fixed was this crappy bit that looked like it had been attacked with tin snips. Sorry I didnt get a before pic. It should look good when Its ground down and smoothed over with some bog.

There was a hole like this on both sides of the torana. Who knows what it was for but now they are gone.. I cut them out into a more rectangular shape to make it easier to cut out a replacement part. Then went nuts with the MIG and grinder.. The MIG was jamming heaps thats why some of the welds look shit. After I fixed it they were a lot smoother and neater.

This is after some angle grinding..

I also did a bit of panel beating... The bit that looks attacked with a hammer was all bent intwards (towards the firewall) and was rounded.. Armed with a cold chisel and a hammer this is what it turned out like. I tried to match the other side as much as possible.. I think I did an allright job, looks a hell of a lot better than what it was like before.. The first pic is the good side.

Ill be attacking this a bit later in the week.

As you can see there was heaps of unwanted holes on the wheel arch. Most were from when the gas was connected up. I thought they looked shit so mig mig mig mig mig...

Posted Image

The mig didnt like the paint so off it came.

Just after I started to grind the welds down the angle grinder packed it in so I called it quits for the day...

Will update you again tomorrow night.

lol! only reason i asked as i have removed the front ones from mine, but have yet to remove the rear one... its a f****in pain in the ass! it follows the same path under the body as the fuel lines and its all inter-twined with them and sh!t... the only way i could see removing it would be to remove the fuel lines also which i wasnt to keen on, so i bent it down in the engine bay so i could clean up the rust! :P

Bit dodgy i know, but figured i have two here to choose from, or theres also the option of getting it replaced properly which wouldnt be a bad option.

Good luck with the rest of it mate.
