Hey guys.
I havent posted anything on this for a while, but I can happily say the Henrob is a good bit of gear, I bought it approx 3 weeks ago, the welds it produces is not like the TIG weld (could be a question of my technique) which has pretty little ripples, so if you desperately want pretty little ripples then dont use the Henrob, personally I like the TIG weld ripples but I will live comfortably with out it.
Having said that the welds it produces are very clean smooth welds, although because im still new to this my welds are smooth but a little lumpy at some sections, but I must say im getting better every day I use it. The penetration is really good as the seller suggests and if youve never used an oxy before like me dont be scared to try it because I was in the same boat, it took me approx 3 hrs of trial and error (more error) to be able to weld some aluminium scraps. But as I found out this didnt make me an expert by any stretch of the imagination. A few days of welding scraps and what not I ran out of Acetylene, then a few days after that I ran out of Oxygen.
After a week or so i moved onto my fuel tank, most of my fuel tank is now welded and currently im at my 3rd acetylene bottle and second Oxygen bottle, but to be fair most of the previous bottles were wasted through a lot of error and no welding lessons which I may do later on. The bottles im using is small D size.
Disadvantage over a TIG is no pretty little ripples, and runs out of Acetylene and Oxygen where the TIG doesnt use this but of course uses Argon mix and or pure Argon for Aluminium, but you will rarely find the TIG run out of electricity lol so the use is almost non stop as electricity is obviously never ending. Also you dont need to use any aluminium flux with TIG where you must use it with the Henrob, although it will weld without flux but wont look anywhere near as nice.
Advantage of the Henrob over TIG is the aluminium doesnt have to be super clean, it will (as I found) weld dirty, oxidized aluminium extremely well, probably as good as clean but dont quote me on that. (Cleaning aluminium for welding insures a good weld espescially for tanks etc), It is however advisable to super clean the aluminium simply because it is easier to spot the aluminium at melting point (point at where the filler rod is to be applied), when the aluminium is clean and at melting point the spot goes shiny and slightly swells up and so you know the filler needs to be gently pushed into it, when oxidized and dirty the aluminium at melting point doesnt change much in colour or it goes reddish hot so you have to tap it with the filler rod to see when its at melting point and when the rod pokes through the dirty/oxidize aluminium you know its at melting point, but the risk of this is you may be too late (due to lack of warning) and blow a hole though it. Christ Ive done a few times lol.
If I were to do it again the only change I would make is to use E size bottles as its a pain to go out and refill it when youre on a roll and making nice welds, but as I said I wasted a lot of oxy/accet from practice and stuff ups. I will show pics asap.
