also, could someone please explain the whole backspace thing to me?

what is the general concensus on backspacing for toranas with wide mags and flares? If i'm gonna get some new rims i might need to know about all that!

and if HQ pattern is the only option, what's involved in the conversion?

cheers.

for those with wide rubber, 295 etc. how do you find traction? I have heard that wider tyres give less traction due to having less pressure on the ground.

To answer this question - this is basically correct when the road is wet (the wider tyres can aqua-plane across the top of the water).

However, in good dry conditions, the fatter the better! Lots of rubber on the road (ie. a large 'footprint', generally gives improved traction/grip). My 265's have certainly shown excellent traction... I even ran an 11.99 down the quarter on standard BFG's. But you generally get heaps more traction on a drag strip than you ever would on the street too.

some people prefer to use the off set which is the bolt up face location in relation to the center of the rim, problem is that off set changes with rim width, i prefer back space which is the distance from the rear rim lip to the bolt up face, ie put a straight edge across the rim and measure down to where the center would bolt to the axle. Simple and stays the same regardless of rim width.
Toranas and HQ's etc usually use 4inch but can get away with 5inch.

moot you might be right about the th700 but it has been built by one of the top perth g/box fellas and he recons should handle 550hp no problems.

he had one in one of the chev trucks with duel wheels at the back and a big block, used to use it to tow his drag car and do burnouts

Here are a few photos of my LX. 10x15 with 295's on the rear and 7x15 with 245's on the front, yes they both scrub like a mofo( front on full lock and rear when you hit bumps in the road. When I have to replace them, I will use 225's and 275's and I hope that will stop the scrubbing. Mind you I do like the look of the SS as it is.

This photo shows the width of the tires better.

This my old LH, it was mini tubbed with 8.5X15 fitted with 255's on the rear and 6X15 with 215's on the front.
