Well i was down at summernats on friday and i spotted QIK383, who used to be a forum member. I checked out his back tyres and was interested to see that they're jap Toyos in 295/50/15. It interests me because I'm running the same tyre in BFGoodrich. The problem with mine is that its all a bit close for comfort. The tyre is just lucky to be 10m from both the flare and the innerguard. But my BFs balloon to the shithouse, especially considering that the rims are 11s. But these toyos appear to be slightly skinnier and more square on the rim.
So perhaps these tyres are closer to a 285 in width which is the magic size for a flared LH/LX.

So from my end of it, they seem as though they'll fit better and in my opinion look better (can't stand the agricultural look of the BFGs). So the only questions are;
- are they any good as a tyre? and;
- are they available or are they a special import?

Heres pics showing my torry with 295/50/15 BFGs on 15x11" rims and QIK383 running the same size tyre in toyo.

Those Toyo sure do look better, and agree that the side walls seem more square than the BF's.

Maybe chopper might know how to get a set of these toyos and may also know a bit more specs on them.

One more thing, those 295's on the purple flareless sedan looks PHAT as! wow i love it! got any more pics of it?

The car looks awsome. Unfortunatly I don't have any pics of the whole car, only the back wheels. I kinda got distracted lol

I think those tyres are just what the doctor ordered.

You'd need to check a few other things, i.e. he may have 12" rims, his is tubbed, yours isn't, axle may also be shorter and his wheels may be a different offset.

Those BF's look like they are sitting fine with regards to the flare, not sure about inside clearance.

Toyo's are fine. Never knew they made a 295/50 because nobody asked me to check. With tyre width, the quoted figure is the NOMINAL size when inflated on the design rim. The nominal section width has a tolerance of 2-3 % ( one is undersize, the other is oversize, never remember which is which ). This means your 295 width tyre could have as much as 15 MM width difference between brands.

I always remeber when I was at Beaurepaires Mitcham. We had a 195/75R14 Bridgestone RD229 next to a 185/75R14 Dunlop PA47 ( real old pattern Grand Prix ). The Dunlop was bigger than the Bridgestone.

exactly chop, theres definatly differences in pyhsical size vs measurments brand to brand. Yella what i was getting at in my first post was that he used to run 275/40s, so I'm assuming that pretty much what it was tubbed to suit. But if these tyres are more like a 285, he probably managed to squeeze them into the same space and the same rims.

The rims looked liked 10s, I had a good look at them. You'd be nuts to run 295s on 12s. According to a rim/tyre calc on the net my 11s are oversized for 295s. I think it said 9.5-10.5 for ideal rim size.

A 295/50 on a 11.5" rim used to be a legal fitment. It may still be. A 205/60 used to be a legal fitment on an 8" rim. Now the limit is 7.5". The regs are constantly changed, unfortunantly.

Okies QikSLR, didn't realise the history of it. On that basis would be worth a look. Must say, I'm a fan of coming all the way out to the flare though.

Is that wheel jacked up one side in the pic, looks like it's sitting very high. Mine looks like that when jacked up on one side.

I too am a fan of filling up the guards to the max. Thats why I'm hoping those tyres are only slightly smaller than what I've got. In the photo the car is on stands and jacked up from the diff center sitting on the springs. So thats pretty much how it should sit on the road.

I've gotta send it back to the body shop of have more taken out of my guards (back to the bolt holes) so I can run it as low as possible. I may have to run a slightly thicker rubber on top. But hopefully I can have the top of the tyre in the flare. I'm modifying everything to suit the BFGs, so if I go to a slightly smaller tyre it'll be nice and safe on the street. But atleast I know i'll have room for 26x12x15 slicks when the time comes.

Because of the ballon of the BFGs, as the tyre goes up the balloned sidewall rubs on the flares. If it was like that all the time, the flare would soon be toast (or the tyre would catch on fire).
