I'm trying to remove the lower dash which the choke, w/wiper and headlight switch knobs are connected through, but I've come stuck on trying to disassemble them. All screws on the dash have been removed and also the round clips that secure around the knobs have been removed. Everything is freed up but I think I may have to disconnect them somehow behind the dash? Or do the knobs pop off the shaft somehow? Man that sounded suss.

Any ideas?

Choke cable needs to be completely removed, undo at carbie.
Undo nut behind dash, remove entire cable, catch the nut and washer.

Wiper switch, remove knob (Pull it), undo nut behind knob, drop switch inside dash.

Park brake, Not 100% sure here, never removed one, but i dont think their is a nut to remove, only the handle, 1 grub screw.

Air control levers, 2 grubs screws underneith each lever.

Headlight switch, pull headlights full on, reach in behind switch and find small button, press it the shaft will come out, undo the nut that you can now see,

Thats all i can think of.

P.S. disconnect the power cable first.

Ah Paul, you are a gentleman and a torana scholar sir. I'll give those instructions a go when I get home (approx 65.41mins). Ok so are u sure the wiper knob just comes off with force? I don't wanna snap it. Thanks again

the wiper knob needs to have a small tab pushed up from underneath throught the little hole.
use a small nail or tiny screwdriver.

with the lights the "magic button" is accessed through the round finger hole in the sheet metal under the switch.
they can be a real prick but you'll get it.

Ok, everything is off except for wiper switch. The lights were pretty easy, it seems the wipers are being a prick tho. Where abouts is this little tiny hole you speak of? Theres a little hole that goes right through the shaft just after the plastic knob. Is that it? I've got two hands around it and put a lot of force into it but it won't budge. Maybe the LH design is different to the LX?

Use a unfolded paper clip as a prong to push the connecting arm of the knob away from the shaft. The arm has a hook on the end that secures the knob from pulling off the shaft. You are just pushing through the centre off the shaft to force the hook off the shaft.

Wholly fark!!! Don't just pull it off, the clip needs to be removed as described. If you don't you run the risk of snapping the back of the switch off, and there is no fixing it from there, it is absolutely stuffed. I have a couple of switches here that I can photograph that have met this unfortunate death at the hands of others if you want!!!!

I measured the hole in the shaft at about 1.75mm.

Push the pin up from underneith.

Like i said i hadn't done this before, so now having investigated it, it is easy but the method is important.

Sorry for the focus, bloody hard to take small photo's so close to get the detail.

Paul

P.S. the hole is not in the knob, it's behind it.

OK I finally got it off. I followed all the instructions and got to the point where I had the hook completely out of the hole and the knob still wouldn't budge from it's position. At this point of time I was losing paitence and was suspecting the knob was glued. So I thought screw this, got a pair of pliars around the metal wiper casing inside the dash and just pulled like all hell at the knob. It shot off at about 100mph towards the back of the car but was able to quickly locate it. Guess what, surprise surprise someone had glued it previously. I love old cars.

Thanks everyone for your help, I woulda been stuffed or gone loco or postal or something if I didn't have these instructions. I think my switch will live to fight another day and no one got hurt at the post office so it's all good.

Oky doky thanks to Paul's instructions all knobs came off easily. Just an addition for anyone attempting to do this, I have attached a photo of the handbrake realease handle removed. There should be a screw (grub screw?) underneath the the handle (stop it from spinning) and then you should simply unscrew it (anti-clockwise) in order for it to come off. In my case a previeous owner had glued it in so it required a little extra force to break the first turn...
