OK..

Spent 2 hours today at the Holden Wreckers..pulling wheels..wire brushing stub axles..generally getting filthy!
This is what I found...

4 x HZ one tonner chassis
4 x HX one tonners chassis
2 x WB one tonners chassis.
1 X HQ one tonners chassis..

All had 9943693 and 9943694 front stub axles with the exception of the HQ which had 0996 on the drivers side..a cast GMH NF "25" not "5" and BH at the top and FK at the bottom. None had HD stamped on them. Stampings were BH, FD, KD. None had 9943695 or 96 fitted. The cast numbers are quite clear using the last 4 numbers i.e. 3693/3694.

Now I am guessing..even though the parts books dont agree..that from HX on they might have made all stub Heavy Duty....The HQ ones are obviously thinner by the eye.
Comments?..

Trying to make sense of the labels on the pics compared to the text above, which one is HQ?

Oks, thanks for the clarification Rory. I'm guessing if they do look the same then maybe, as been suggested previously, that a different heat treatment was performed?

On that..all the HX/HZ/WB had the numbers 3693 or 3694 cast where the HD stamp is in the above pic. But Howard all one tonners were supposed to have the heat treated HD stubs. 3695 and 3696..same part no. as A9X...They clear didnt so I am wondering if GMH just heat treated all the stubs from HX on?..Interesting theory.
R
P.S. These included alloy and cast calipers..It made no difference..they were all the same stubs.

There are 2 very simple differences between A9X/HX 1 tonner stub axles and all other HQ - WB stub axles.

#1 The A9X ones have more metal around the top ball joint.

#2 Part numbers.

Maybe there was heat treating as well, but can that be proven? Now until I can see a verified report on where a racer continually bent HQ stub axles until he started using A9X ones, I wouldn't bother chasing my tail. Except for those who want correct part numbered stub axles for their A9X resto.

Ahhh. But Chop..everyone says HX/Z one tonners are A9X part number stubs..they are all REAL beefy around the top ball joint.
Interesting.

Which is why I posted A9X/HX 1 tonner. To me, posting it that way means the items are the same.

Have I made it clearer, or is more information on the way I posted reqired?

Tend to agree..But there was a lot of conversation on it must have 95/96 stamped on them to be the real deal...I am guessing anything out of a HX/Z tonner are the go.

I'm no part number expert. I'm merely pointing out the only REAL difference between all the stub axles in the HQ - WB series Holdens. I'm also stating that there is no proof that the different parts will make any difference to lap times, or that it will make the parts last longer.

As I said, if you're doing an A9X resto, then get the correct part numbered stub axles for your project. Otherwise, I don't think it will make any difference which HQ - WB stub axles you use.

Rory what if the part number on the box they came in was 95/96 but what was inside had the 93 /94 numbers actually on them like a lot of other parts in boxes do. Just a thought but Red should be able to clear it up.

Ok
1 is still covered in the Holden packing snot.
This is the passengers side of A9X with calipers mounted forward
Numbers on it are

Cast into it on the back as I look at them
438
GM NF
5
B K

Now next to the 43 is a ground section that has hand stamped into it HD
On the face of the stub there is a 5 cast into it at the top
There is another ground section and hand stamped into that is 9

Now
The clean one is different
The only casting on the back of the stub is a single B
There is a large casting lump half way up the stub on the back about the same size as the machined indent at the back of the stub section
There are some difficult to read numbers on the front
I can sorta make out 3743695
And under that 20

Thats all I can tell ya.
