^ is for US gallons(3.78L), any old car literature in australia is in imperial(4.54L) gallons or if older people are talking mpg it will be imperial.
Personally I find it easier to remember:
mpg x L/100km = 282
ie 28mpg = 10L/100km, 10mpg = 28L/100km, 20mpg = 14L/100km etc
or 282/mpg = L/100km
or 282/(L/100km) = mpg
