G'day people,
I'm after some advice on which is a better carby. I've got a fairly hot/wild 383 on the go at the moment and i'm looking at using a 825 barry grant or maybe a holley. Which have people used?? Which is better and why?? Which manifolds can i use with both?? I was wanting to either use a harrop single plane or a torque power manifold.
Also whats the difference between, vac and mech and a double pumper??

cheers

no hesitation i'd buy the Bg demon carb.

After having 3 holleys on the monaro ( 650 Vac, 750DP and 850DP race) the 750 DP demon i have now is the most reliable, easily tuned, and consistant carb ive used.

The holleys played up for no known reason after some time and just gave us trouble!

Vaccum secondaries use vaccum signal to activate the secondaries.. meaning that theyre better for street use, while Mechanical secondaries use a linkage to activate the secondaries.
Double Pumpers have an accelerator pump on the secondary circuiit as well as the primary circuit and are more suited to race and hi-po work. they tend to run a bit richer due to the accelerator squirts with throttle movement.

Ive always used Mechanical DP carbs even on teh street and the demon is a VERY good carb, i wouldnt go past it. It bolts on to any holley manifold. Same bolt pattern.

Good luck!

BG looks betters, and has a lot more features then a holley as std. Like site glasses, idel ezz circuit, ect.
Dollar vrs dollar, go BG.
Nothing wrong with a holley, just personal choice, having owned both.
BG, uses most holley parts too, like gaskets, jets, power valves and gaskets !

My only gripe with BG of late has been the Quality Control. Things like air bleeds screwed in on angles, cross threaded main jets, boosters installed incorrectly etc are something I see a bit too much of in a product that is advertised as an 'out of the box race ready' carburettor.

Bang for buck they're hard to beat, I'd suggest getting the Race Demon version though over a Mighty Demon, they have a better fuel curve and more adjustments.

Good post, saved me putting a similar one up. Well, thats confirmed it for me, the holley is coming off and the BG Road Demon (for a mild 308) is being ordered. I just cant seem to get the friggin' holley running properly at all.

Sorry to steal your thread mick... but what is the story on these carbys called "Dambest"? Are they reworked Holleys and strictly race?
Don't see much off them.

I have to agree with the quality control issues, with both Holley and BG carbs. I have seen swarf in both and also poorly assembled BG's.

I personally prefer Holley and have seen HP series 750's outpower BG's repeatedly.

BG's do have some good features and look the part, perhaps this is what you are paying for ??

Most Holleys that people have trouble with are 20 years old and way off base settings.

FWIW the Dambest carbs are loosely Holley based and damn expensive.

Lately I have used a few Proform carbs (chinese Holley HP copies) both as body upgrades and complete carbs and they have all performed exceptionally.

Hope this helps.

Agree with Struggler, I've also supplied customers with Pro-Forms, and been very happy with the results I've seen. I feel that they are over priced though, our friends at Rocket/VPW need to sharpen up the pencil. ;)

FWIW, I'm running a Pro-Systems Dominator, which is a Holley Dominator modified by a race carburettor specialist in the USA. Haven't used it yet, although my carb has been used on a 427 Windsor, and produced 730+hp on 98 octane pump fuel.

Dambest carbs are extremely good, from what I've seen in the US, but their cost is prohibitive IMO for them to be seen in Australia in any great numbers.

I buy the bodies and Quickfuel blocks from Summit.

Complete carbs from eBay here in Aust. Some guy in Melb. had quite a few and I think they were about $750ea ? I haven't seen them advertised for a while.

How do you work out which size carby suits your engine?

A9X try this formula
Cubic inches x RPM / 3456 x VE% = Carb CFM
Or here

barry grant has just released an inline 4 barrel version

havent seen one in the flesh but would be the bees knees for v8 manifolds with runners to each intake port , no more lean front and back cylinders !!!

those inline carbies look good. they only have manifolds for chevs at the moment, but that's a start.

dit and finish aside, the BG carbies seem a better proposition than Holley.
BG has machined throttle plates and metering blocks, whereas the Holleys are cast and can have air leaks.

i believe that proform and quickfuel also do the machined parts
