Hi Tony. The airbox was a necessity over here in case the motor blew up it didn't shoot oil out the scoop onto the windscreen. It certainly went better though as it was only getting fresh outside air from the scoop and not hot air from the engine bay.
As for the smell problem, I guess it couldn't hurt. If stink is coming out of the scoop into the plenum, well the airbox would stop that.
The base of the airbox is just alloy plate. The foam was the cheapest dense foam I could find. It just had a hole the same size as the base of the air cleaner, and it just sat on top of the carby and was held in place with the air filter and bolt. Very simple, but very effective. The dense foam pressed against the bonnet meant it never moved or rotated while driving. I had it on the car for about 2 years, and only removed it to fit the tunnel ram.
I think I still have it actually. The foam is probably knackered by now but I'm sure I still have the base plate. Oh crap, you're miles away : )
