I certainly dont take your interest in the judging as derogatory and it is something that is always discussed after each years event and it will be examined again after all practice makes perfect!

I would have no idea what reasoning was used by the Judges, I met them shook their hands and went about my chores.

At the same time I was gob smacked to have taken three trophies for my cars in the Historic class, in fact I wasn't even at the presentaions due to other show activities and was uncertain as to what cars had got the trophies? I expect the cars got the gongs because of the paint jobs that my son did on them, all cudos to him!

Me and another Club Member used to do the most original judging in past years but it was heart wrenching at times deciding on who got the gong and who did not and certainly I always favoured non HVTC cars to avoid any suggestion of bias, but that was in one way wrong becuase if the Club Car was the best it should have got the gong, nonethelss I had HVT Club Car cringe so you can see why I liked independent judging. I have in past years refused to accept a trophy for my cars as I feared recriminations.

SStorana has suggested that he will be talking to other clubs to assist in judging of some classes next year. So stay tuned for more info.

As a means of improving the beast any suggestions as to what people think will improve the show should be made openly and will be genuinely considered, I cant say that we will accept all suggestions but we will certaily consider them. :spoton:

Theres alot of guys that spend heaps of time and money on their cars to be part of toranafest, and hope to take home a trophy.. they can be disappointed if they dont get the recognition that they think they deserve and go home feeling empty handed.

This reminds me of an enduro ride, fundraiser, I did a few years ago in the victorian high country.

1. it was a very competitive event.
2. there were heaps of entrants.
3. everyone was as well prepared as they could be..
4. some finished and some did not..
5. everyone got the same medal to take home, as being a participant, first across the line or last.

Being a participant in an event such as this is personally rewarding as well as generating funds for worthwhile charities.

If you feel that you deseved a trophy and didnt get one, just visit the ronald mcdonald room at the john hunter hospital, look at all the trophys there.. they even smile back at you!!

Great show guys! Congrats on all the hard work you all put in to make it a great day. We had a great time and will be making the trip down from Brisbane again. Hopefully with a few more QTCC members.
Cheers

There will always be issues with judging of cars, and someone will always feel they deserve a trophy more than someone else. My only issue is when a judge doesn't know what it is he is looking at. Now please don't have ago at me about this, because I am not bagging the car, but a good example is the orange LX SLR5000 being judged the best original LX, and Gerrys' manardin LX SLR5000 getting runner up. Both of these are nice cars, but when you talk about originality, Gerrys car is closer to original. Really, it should have been between the 3 manardin SLR5000's for originality.

Also, Mick (lxsstorana) winning best original LX/UC 2 door. His SS has flares, a drop tank, modified interior, Hotwires, has been resprayed in a different colour etc etc.

I wasn't at the show so I don't know if there was any unmolested hatches there, but surely there was something more original than Mick's... Not saying that Mick's didn't deserve an award, it's one of my favourite Hatches, but it's not exactly factory original.

My thoughts are the section that didn't draw any recognition, was the large number of un-restored full rego street cars that are driven daily .They turn up for the day and leave without any fuss, un-noticed ,have had no big money spent on them, but still stand out by them being a good standard example of what gave Toranas such a good name.I think there needs to be an un-restored category included for the many plain standard old examples. There was one there who's owner won't even drill holes to fit a baby seat thats what I call an un-restored original.

Good point, but the organisers have to draw a line in the sand somewhere as to how many trophys they will hand out on the day too. Maybe that idea can be looked at though, maybe an encouagement award or something along those lines is what would work?

Can someone clarify the difference in categories between best original and best historic?

You can NEVER define the term 'un-restored'. If you put paint on a car is it restored, or maintained??? If you paint one guard, one door, the whole side, replace the seat material, carpet - when does it become restored? Its never ending and creates HUGE arguments!!!

In the old Holden fraternity we had introduced another class - 'Club' class. This was for cars that were used regularly, and showed signs indicating same. No big dollars involved, just well maintained and useable cars that presented well. This was designed to reward the guys who took their cars to runs, rain, hail, or shine. This is the basis of the club movement.

So three classes are used: Best Stock, Best Modified, Best Club.

I should be able to get copies of the rules/regs developed for these classes which will assist those involved. P.M if needed and I'll pass you details of guys to speak to.

Cheers,

Craig.

:D OrangeLJ,

Best Historic was eligible only for those cars on Historic Plates, best original could inlcude any car deemed to be as close as is possible to original.

AHHH oky doke! that makes alot more sense.

We were just wondering as gordo won best original, and we were trying to figure out how you would disseminate between best original and best historic. That makes perfect sense now.

Thanks Garry.

Garry,
how did you determine "Historic Plates" as the Cameo Gold has standard looking plates, but is a club rego'd car. It must meet Historic status for club rego.........

:D enderwigginau,

Aaaaah yet another problem arises, in NSW Historic cars carry specific Plates, numbers followed by H on white backgrounds with purple lettering, obviously not so in the far off State of Queensland!!!

Good ol Peter Beatty.

For next year how can we identify Historic cars from other states, is it on their rego label? Anyone, anyone, voodoo economics? Sorry Ferris Bueller's day of flash back!

CraigA you still need un-restored cars,as they are correct and the only way to see what the model come out like. And a good reference point for serious restores because the components parts are correct and with factory performance cars, this makes their value .Restored cars and maintained cars are often ,built or maintained from parts not original to that car and may not be correct . parts of the body may have to be painted fair enough but whole resprays mean often the colour is not right (painters license)The number of painters that spray GTR and XU-1 engine bays black is an example of what I mean.

G'day All

as Garry has stated, all of you comments/ suggestions will be taken into account and when we sit down in the next few feeks for a post mortem, we will be looking closely at these issues.

What do I think?? Well I have spoken to a few other members of other clubs and there are a number of issues that I see.

Firstly, the idea of getting ANSMA Judges in, as opposed to "peer judging" did have alot of success. It saved us, the organisers a shiet load of counting, etc that normally takes the good part of three hours and it stopped any of the "trophies for the mates" voting to happen. On the whole, their judging was pretty good. :spoton:

The down side was that they really have no idea  when it comes to the "original" classes. Of the eight trophies in that class, I would say that only four were deserved winners, and that's not taking anything away from those four cars, they were very nice examples, but they were just not "original".

What is the fix?? Well it may be that we, all of the Torana clubs that are present at Toranafest, form a panel of judges to do the original categories. I would hope that with a couple of members from each club, we would be able to remain unbiased as well and come up with a fair result.

Craig, I would like to hear more about the "club" class as I feel that there is alot of cars out there that are going unnoticed because they are unrestored, etc. Especially the old S & SL models, etc. Anything that you can send my way, please do.. Maybe we flick the "Historic category and have "Club".

Maybe we have another look at the categories altogether. I know that ppl ask why are the UC's in with the LH/LX's?? It comes down to economics. If we split the models, we would end up with 22 trophies per category!!! That would have meant approx 100 trophies. We would still be presenting them!! I would not like to see an increase in trophies for next year.

The suggestion of every entrant getting a Trophy, or similar, does have merit. The problem I have is this, the main reason we are doing this is for charity and at the end of the day it is a balancing act of trying to raise as much money as possible while keeping the entrants happy. How many car shows can you go to these days for $30/35 entry where you get a T shirt and a decent goody bag?? To me, this is what the entrants get. By all means if people think that we should drop the T shirt and bag, etc for an "entrants trophy" let me know, because thats what would have to happen.

I think that the "Best at Show" category might go, and be replaced with something else.. Maybe Best GTR, Best XU1, Best SLR 5000, Best SS, Best L34, Best A9X..
Who knows?? It is definately a very contenious topic.

Other issues we will look at are;
Having presentations at around 1.30 - 2.00pm. That way those who need to leave early, can do so.

Having other activities on the day??

Having a Dinner the night before??

All these things, and many other will be looked at.

Please keep your feedback coming. It is welcomed and i will only allow us to run a better show next year. As I have said before, "If you don't learn, you cannot improve".

cheers
Mick

I think the questions being asked regarding the judging & car categories are only further indicators fo the success of this event.

Will this event grow further to become the equivalent of the GT Nationals held anually in Perth???

Great work again to the organisers & thank you again for a great day.

The best at show awards seemed a bit out of place at toranafest. to be pedantic what classed them as best at show?

I like the timeslot the trophies are awarded in, i know it can be a long day, but if you bring your family you can make a beach/picnic day out of it.

Instead of a trophy for everyone, how bout simply a "certificate" of appreciation, something A4 sized, with the year, HVTC logo, maybe something else like their model of car on it. that would be cheap and everyone could frame it and hang it on the wall if they wanted.

Just a suggestion

The best way to learn apart from your own experiences, is to utilize the experience of others.

I'll forward contact details of a guy who is right on top of this stuff. When we worked on creating it we used the Street Machine nats stuff, contacts within the FX/FJ clubs, and a million conversations with club members and other car enthusiasts. Its not exactly right, and never will be. But it will help finess what is already a great day.

To be honest, I reckon if you are that keen on getting a trophy, go buy one. Its a whole lot cheaper than building a car to get one!!!

Cheers,

Craig.
