Hey guys,

I notice a lot of people do their slab first, whereas others do the structure first, and then lay the slab into it.

What are the pros and cons of each method? I can't decide how to attack mine (hopefully I will be contributing to this thread next year sometime).

Keep all the pics, sizes and info flowing!

Mine has the slabs layed up to it. The shed is 20yrs old. The bottom of the gal sheet has rusted.

I put the shed up first then poured the slab inside. When it rains I get no water inside, and also no wind. Up my way that's handy cause the wind has nothing to stop it.we are fairly open. For me, I would do it again the same way. Only down side, you loose 150mm height inside. Not a real issue though.
Just have to make sure it won't muck up the doors in the openings.

Mine will have the shed up and the slab done later

Theoretically

I have an existing slab from the old shed in place though its not large enough

So they will build the shed around the slab and I fill in the leftovers

I won't be losing any height as my shed builder uses 3.1m sheets for a 3.0m wall

So nothings lost and council doesn't seem to mind

So they work to a 3.0m finished height above floor level not ground level

I'll be cladding mine with weatherboards, so I'm thinking slab first may be easier for this method?

......You can still do that with a raised slab and overlap the sheets of iron 50mm or however much you like over the edge of the slab. No water/wind will get in that way either,

Ok guys. i need you help. Time to build my shed. I know that the measurement are going to be 9000x6000(gable end) by 3000high (at the eaves). I am planning to have 2 roller doors in the 9000mm side with a 3 meter workshop. What I need from you experienced shed builder/buyers is some tips and recommendations on what to look for in a shed. I have done some quick quotes online. These surprisingly vary by upto $2000. I would like to know what questions I need to ask to compare the quality, functionaly and value of the shed. These are the areas I have though of so far:

Base Price

Delivery To home

PA Door Extra

Plans

Total Cost

  Roof TCT

Roof Profile

Walls TCT

Wall Profile

Gutter Type

Rafters

Mullions

Purlins

Wall Gurts

Residential Reg

Terraine catergory

Wind Catergory

I was hoping someone could explain the last 3 sections(Res Reg, Terraine And Wind Catergory) so I have an understanding of the implications of these.

Maybe I am over analyzing some things, but I really enjoy understanding/learning about different things. Plus I just want to make sure i get the best bang for my buck! I am also very handing so I will be building this myself, but will be getting the concreting done. Is there any other things I need to think of Eg Power( I know a give) but other things like water connection(is it worth it?)

Hi...as Geno says 3 phase power is good , if you need it for your equiptment.

However "these days" for somewhere around $400 you can get a 1 phase to 3 phase converter ( VVVF drive ).

For that sort of coin, you get a top name brand unit that can run stuff at whatever speed you like from virtually 0rpm to 10  times its normal speed ( should you be feeling brave). Reversing direction is easy as ,too.

If you just want a bit of 3 phase power, it can just be left set at 50 hertz ( as per what you get from the supply authority)

Like all this stuff, there is more to consider before you race out and get one, and wire it up.......however, for  say,  a 1.1kw 3 phase motor, you no longer actually need  a 3 phase supply at all.

Think of all those big heavy sliding steel gates in industrial areas...most are supplied from no more than a power point, but have a 3 phase motor attached to their gearbox. The VVVF drive converts the supply to 3 phase.

The speed is just tweaked by a keypad / or a  PC until you are happy.

Have a Look at Shedsafe.com.au this site will explain the Region, Terrain Cat among a lot of other stuff.
There are 4 Regions A B C D. They depend on where you live in Aus. Most in Land Aus can be Region A. Cat 3 is a lighter building Cat 2.5 medium Cat 2 is Stronger.

So I'm almost done.

From shed up here is what has happened after that.

Removed the rear wall from the garage to give drive through access to the shed, I will probably put another rollerdoor on this when I get time.

Power wise, I did the following:
  • 8x Double GPOs on 2 circuits.
  • 2x 15 Amp GPOs on separate circuits (Welder and Compressor) with the compressor GPO in the back corner but a switch on the door frame too.
  • 2x Hoist separate circuits
  • 10x Double Fluros (4 in each bay and 2 above the Workshop area) Will add another 2 once mezzanine is in.
  • 3x exterior LED down lights out front
  • 1x 150W Halogen on the side of shed lighting up grass area

Now I need to seal and paint the floor, then put up the hoist and I can move in! Plan to build some shelving out of steel and also a mezzanine above the workshop area.

Slab - DONE
Power and lighting - DONE
Network Cable - Sleeve run between house and shed, wire to come.
CCTV - Needs the Network cables
Alarm - Will be ordering in the next day or so.
Aircon (Planned on Evap but told it might not be a good idea.) - Not sure what to do yet
Car 2 post Hoist - About to order
Possibly insulate walls and plasterboard - Later
Storage
Large TV

Always slab first!!!

Wet concrete touching colourbond or gal will rust it in no time.

20mm*20mm rebate round the sides without roller doors will allow for the sheets to sit down on and allow nothing in, creatures or dust if done properly.

Plus the sub base touching the out side of the colourbond on my shed has done the same.

I think Residential Regs  would be refering to what the council will allow, depending if you are in a country or residential area, some require colorbond instead of zinc  also height may be an issue if your in town, locally I cant go any higher than 4.5m at the ridge line.  Terrane Category refers to how flat the block is and how much filling may be required, Wind Category this depends on your location, locations out of town will be a higher wind category than somewhere on the edge of suburbia and then a location in middle of suburbia would be less again, the higher the wind category the more bracing and tie downs required
