Great job Phil, plenty of space there for stuff
I like the idea of a PC in the shed too.
Yeah the amount of times I have to go into the house to look at wiring diagrams, workshop manuals or forums, I thought best to just chuck an old Laptop out in the shed. Also allows me to log into the CCTV System. This will be displayed on a 24" Monitor mounted up on wall.

All prepped up and ready to be poured in the morning.
It's only going to be a small shed compared to others on here but it's big enough to get the job done.
The size is 7x6.5m

Mines taking forever cos I'm fifo and had weddings and trips out of town that have taken up my times off. Pretty sure my shed is taking longer than some of these new houses to build hahaha

The paint I used was White Knight paving paint from Bunnings. One 10 litre tin thinned out with turps for the first coat should be good for 2 coats of the 90sqm floor area I'm covering. Just remember to wear a respirator cos its strong stuff (speaking from experience now lol). The colour is the light grey from their paint chart, don't choose their medium grey off the shelf cos its too dark I reckon. I'll take a pic of the tin when I do the second coat..its in a white tin though

Hi,
Just after some advice/experience/engineering opinion.
Having finshed the 8 x 9 x 3.2 shed, its now getting crowded.
Thus I want to put in a mezzanine floor. Sketches attached.
I had a search on this thread, but got bogged down.
I'm looking to make a 3.6m square frame, from 200mm C purlins ( the sheetmetal gal ones they make shed verticals etc out of ).
It would sit on 4 x 75/75/3 RHS legs , dyna bolted down, with tabs welded up top for the 200mm purlins to bolt to, via 10mm bolts .
On top of all that, would be 150mm C purlins supporting yellow tongue flooring.
It may attach to the shed, but essentially would be free standing.
Do you think any extra bracing would be reqd?
Any ideas welcome.
Thanks
p..s storage up there would be tyres, wheels and bulky stuff....no engines, anvils, locomotives etc

Hi Col,
My mezzanine floor is attached to the inner walls of the shed, so with a free standing one,
you need cross bracing or triangles under the floor to the legs.
This is because the weight of the floor ( approx 150kg of floor sheet + 100kg of 150cp + 80kg of 200cp ),
and tyres is top heavy and will move/vibrate/sway etc.
Hi,
Just after some advice/experience/engineering opinion.

is your floor 4 metres square?
I have 250cp spanning 5 metres, and the floor weight sags 5mm in the middle

I would also be making the legs at least 100mmx3mm min. 5mm would be even better.
125mmx5mm round legs would be my choice with 5mm tabs welded on that insert into the inside of your c purlins around 250mm. bolt with 4 bolts to the tabs.

ok...thanks guys...I don't want sagging...wobbling or whatever...as there will be a Torana parked under it!!
the price difference for 75 sq versus 90 sq or whatever for the legs is very small...so I'll go with your recommendations.

Since I'm on a very low budget I can't afford a shed yet. Using scrounged materials I was able to make a porch extension and some shelves though.

The shelves have plenty of bracing to support car parts. I topped them with 18mm chipboard. To save on paint costs the chipboard was given a generous coat of used sump oil. It came out surprisingly well.
I still dream of a proper shed with a slab, but this will do for now. At least it gives me space for my parts!

Excellent job done Steve.
You could transfer the shelves to the shed when the time comes.

Thanks, but no, they aren't transferrable since they are built into the porch extension. One set of uprights is holding up the roof! But the shed will be more workspace than storage anyway, I don't want it filled with clutter.
I'm mainly posting this for the benefit of others who may not have a lot of spare cash. if you look on Gumtree you can get a lot of used building materials: the timber I used came from an unwanted pool enclosure (free if you take it away!). I still had to buy fixings, bolts and paint etc but I saved a lot of money on wood.
I have a dismantled steel shed - also free on the please-take-it-away plan -that is waiting for the time when I can afford a slab to put it on. it was about 5 hours work for me and two other guys, but if you had to buy it new it would be a couple of grand worth easy. Also included was a three meter roller door - and they aren't cheap!
So if you don't mind putting in some elbow grease and don't insist on everything being new, you can save a lot of money which can then be put to better use on your car!

ta Datto & Steve...you have connected my 2 thoughts...
1 Dattos mezz is wonderful.I like it, but I'm a confirmed tightarse
2 Steves is a good low cost solution.
Datto...did you get all that at an auction or something, as that stuff seems to cost a bit....but is a great solution ,I'd love to copy it

Nothing wrong with being a tightass - I call it "having clear priorities".
I'd LIKE to spend more on my car - but I have a mortgage, bills, etc that need attention first. So I spend money where it's needed most and save where I can.

I bought the uprights from Rackmart... and had them make the blue beams the length I wanted so I could span the shed and have 3 car parking bays underneath
Cost about $1200
I was lucky on the wood beams and boards as my work had just replaced some mez and had this stuff left over... so I grabbed it when I could
I plan to put steel mesh up along most of the walls to enable hanging of stuff from the walls too (also scored from work free)
100 sq m of floor
35 sq m of mez
Why not use the 100+ sq m of wall too !!

Big shed. What are the dimensions?

I am really liking this shed.
What size is the shed itself dattoman?
I am guessing there is plenty of room for a hoist in the centre if you were to do away with the mezzanine floor above the car? you would still have heaps of storage room either side if you took this option would you not?
