hi guys,
just wondering what the smallest width tyre allowed on an 8 inch wide rim is?
I was hoping to put a 215/60/14 on, temporarily for 2 months or so,
I know it is rather small, just curios both on the law, and whether it would be alright for a couple of months

Cheers
Timbo

According to the rim calculator I have the smallest tyre is a 235/60/14 which requires a 6.5-8.0 rim. However Toyo specify a 6.0-8.0 rim for the 225/60/14.

The law is that the rim must meet the tyre manufacturer's specifications.

Hi Timbo,
I had a tyre rim calculator bookmarked,
Car Bible

Have to scroll to the section
"An ideal rim-width calculator"
it seems to suggest that 235 is the minimum width tyre for an 8 inch rim,

But,
from working for a mechanic and tyre fitter mate,
he said that the best way to work it out,
match the tyre width to the rim width,
In this case,
the rim is 8 inches wide,
8 x 25.4 = 203.2mm
therefore the minimum tyre width would be 205mm wide (next available size up)
I think if you don't go below the rim width with the tyre size,
you should be safe.
therefore a 215 should be safe, AFIK.

The ideal ratio of rim to tyre,
Rim width plus 1 inch = tyre width.

Cheers
Chris.

Qld law says tyre width can not be greater than 30% larger than original and tyre rolling diameter can not be greater than 15mm larger than original.
However, if you've got club/special interest rego, you can do what ever you want.

A 45 profile tyre requires a wider rim than 50 or 60 profile tyre.

The correct rim for a 215/45/17 is 7.0 - 8.0" so you have no problems.

People who do fit the wrong size tyre to their rims should keep in mind that insurance companies would be within their rights to refuse an accident claim.
