lol only with shitty old motors until you're going really hot. Look at SR20s, VH40s, 1Js and 2Js etc...

look at the pricing of those motors but, and the fact that they are performance based, the ecotec motor was aimed at a FAMILY SEDAN, and was never made to make oodles of power in standard form, you really cant compare that list you gave to any of the holden 6s, for those exact reasons.

im sure the internals of that concept torana would have been better suited, but as i said, it was never meant to be a massive performance motor like those jap motors you mentioned.

The VH V8s aren't performance motors. Neither are some of the Lexus & Toyota 6cyls and V8s. Motors from Laurels, Chasers, Maximas and so on...

Yeah it all depends how far I want to take it.

But theres plently of aftermarket stuff to strengthen it up. The thing is I won't be running high boost anyway 5-8p.s.i.

Im not gunna be wacking massive upgrades straight away, I gotta get use to driving her first. Much different compared to a VZ.

Cheers

Elaborate. I don't know of any aftermarket gear to "strengthen it up". Interested in seeing that is availible.

EDIT: BTW aftermarket valvetrain components do not strengthen a motor up :tease:

Just to pull the thread up quick, David Wilzig (Ex Street Commodores cover car) has a VS commodore running an ecotec with two hairdryers and nitrous, puts out some ridiculous amount of power and holds the record for fastest V6 Commodore in Aus. He is running standard crank (after breaking his stroker crank) to make his record, i believe he's got stronger pistons and rods, and the heads would naturally be tickled too...

I'd be a bit more trusting of the ecotec crankshaft - they can handle more than you think!! As with the block!!

I rekon on a budget - tune, cam and headwork, pacemakers and a 2 1/2" exhaust system! That should see you over 200kW easily!

Or you could go the Raptor supercharger kit. A mate of mine was the first to purchase the kit and install it on his VT commodore when the kits came out. Got impressive rwhp, and it goes like a shower of shit. So you could imagine what its going to do, in a body thats some 400kg lighter. He had some tuning issues from the people that did it, but has since sorted it out. Seeing that he now works in that sort of business. He said the installation was easy and any one could do it. Although, any performance upgrade on the V6 ecotec is always going to be pricey.

Check them out

not the best donk to mod. has large big ends which create a shite load of heat. heat is bad for reliability.

for the above mods you metioned keith, that would still end up at a fair whack of money. probably 5K? done probably (think about it if you dont beleive me)

i did my pre eco v6 and ended up with 154rwkw (i think more but cant find that dyno sheet)

best mod was the heads. get some one who knows what he is doing.
(my builder exports them back to the US, so he knows a trick or two.)

i also did that with std chip. c.o.m.e. chip was a piece of s&*t. it did need a tune done on it, but didnt have $800 to throw at it at the time.

oil system mods are very important, and piss the balance shaft off while your in there.
fit an oil cooler!

etc, etc.

Yeah I'd say about $5,000 as well. But how is that not awesome value? Better reliability, economy and streetability than a straight six that's off its tits with the same power. And just a generally superior motor; only downside is parts are not as common or cheap, esp aftermarket.

I agree brett - again, i'm assuming a budget performance motor would be around the 5k mark!!

Heads - $1000 max (port work and shave)
Extractors and exhaust (single 2 1/2") - $1500 max pending where you get it done
Cam and chip package/tune - $1000 to 1500

That there seems reasonable to me, and coming in around $4000 there, allowing another grand for miscellaneous bits and pieces!! Cheaper than what it cost me to build my 190HP 186cu red motor...

roller rockers $400?
70mm throttle $100?
oil cooler $300?
radiator upgrade $300? (vs siii ute is/was biggest factory option)
cold air system $?
ceramic coat the headers $?
list goes on....

I'm with jbird on this. buy an import nissan motor and throw it in there.

Yeah but I rather do all that engine work than just bolt on a supercharger.

The exhaust im running is custom extractors with a dual 2inch all the way out with an X pipe in the middle, im going to get it ceramic coated or wats the other treatment called??? I can't think of it

What do you guys recon I should do with the radiator setup???

I have spoke to Simon from Sydney Torana Club and he fitted a radiator from a commordore its look a treat??

Also could someone elaborate on whats involved in head work?? :fool:
Cheers

Head work = enlarged valves and ports. Maybe modifying rocker studs etc if the roller rockers don't go straight on.

Head work: Enlargen ports, shave to increase combustion compression, bigger valves and better springs to increase volume and reliability at high revs, rocker studs. Shouldnt cost you too much for all of that!

What i was specifying before was a simple budget head job - shave and port is the basic performance upgrade on a standard head!

Ok i understand thanks for that, the throttle body and intake manifold is fairly dirty with what looks like alot of carbon deposited on them.

I was going to clean them up.

Any suggestions?

Take it off with sandpaper to a shiny finish?

cheers
