hey guys. Im susing out what exhaust i should run with my Lc V8. The system i currently have is a 3'' mandral bends stainless steel system with 2 high flow mufflers (used for a blown 186). now im going the v8 im susing out what exhaust i should get. options are - keep what i have, or get a twin 2'' system.

is there much of a difference with the 2? after doing the sums the twins will actually have a smaller (not by alot) total cross-sectional area. do the duals sound better? do they perform better? will the 3'' system be too big? (approx 330hp)

other specs - 650 carb, performer manifold, 1 1/2 primaries (4-1) to 3'' collectors extractors.

what do you guys run in your v8s?

i understand a new system will cost me more $ but at present im just chasing info on the 'better' system.

cheers

I'd probably look at 2.25" twin system (maybe reducing to 2" at the back).

Do they sound better? It's a personal preference but I think they do. Plus with a twin system, it will look like a V8! lol...

Performance is disputable and I'm sure others here on the forum will be able to help you out on the pros and cons.

Twins definately sound better, but as Antelope said; performance is disputable. I've heard arguments for both sides. I'd be going twin 2"s with a balance pipe and taking it out to 2-1/4" after the second mufflers, but that's just me and that's how I reckon it sounds the best.

I don't think the single 3" would be too big, I know of some mild 308s with 3"s that don't drone or anything really. And the hotter ones don't sound bad either; just different.

I would stick with the 3" personally.

There would be a greater performance difference in reducing the size of your collectors.

I also reckon 2 1/4" is a poor size for muffler selection. There are heaps of quality mufflers available in 3".

i would go for the single, they generaly make better torque too. and sound heaps nicer too.

I havent used it but the guy i got it off had it in his Lj and ran an 11sec pass.
I have a single on my ute and it sounds great.

Its going to come down to your collectors and the spec of your muffler really.

As your would probably know adavnatge of a twin system means increased temperature of gasses, but a single 3 inch system will allow high speed flow for the gases in higher rpm.

VPW (vic performance warehouse) sell Holley Hooker mufflers, and their great quality units at a descent price if you were in the market for a muffler.

Maybe a combination of 2.75 collectors and 3 inch exhaust would do it. The differences you will see would be very minimal between them all though.

Just remember a couple of thing when picking your exhaust

The car is a lot smaller in lenght than a HQ say
so a 3inch on your hq might be right but a 3inch on a lc might not have enough back pressure (depending on how hotted up your engine is) it is just to short

I found that a stockish 308 with a 3inch system was a little to big used heaps more fuel and lost performance down low

I fitted a 2 1/2 inch single system to mine
It was straight through from the extractors to a hiflow muffler next to the tank with a 3inch outlet it was good and sounded meeeen
And i actually gained bottem end power

Now dont get me wrong BIG is ALWAYS better when the motor is WORKED
But that doesnt apply to basicly stock engines

If you ring its neck you might need a 3inch but i prefer to do burnouts rather than go 100+mile an hour so bottem end is good

anyone got a twin 2 1/2" setup but reducing to 2 1/4" after the mufflers (tailpipes)?

does it sound better then just straight 2 1/2"?

^ i think you would be hard pressed to hear the difference between 2 1/4 and 2 1/2 inch systems with the mufflers playing the biggest part here.

i have a twin 2.5 inch system on my LH running slight offset but straigh through mufflers with an X pipe just after the trans crossmember. it is dumped before the diff and sounds fuggin awesome and suits the motor well. i have put tailpipes on the system before but it didnt have the X pipe and the motor wasnt as worked and it sounded bloody awful, cackled its head off so they got ripped back off!

if you have future plans for the motor go slightly bigger, say quarter inch bigger in pipe diameter.

GO THE TWINS! :tease:

The single system is the superior design. The only reason twin systems are used on larger engines is because a large enough single system can not be fitted.

X pipes are used on twin systems to try and restore the cross scavenging benefits of a single system.

Cross scavenging is the vacuum created by the exhaust gas of a cylinder that has just fired rushing down the exhaust which helps extract the last of exhaust from the cylinder that fired before it.
