Hey all.
I'm looking for an LX Hatch to build atm, but my question is as follows:
If you were to remove the rear seats and seatbelts etc, and put in a custom fibreglass sound-deck-type thing, would you just be able to go in and say "I want to register this car as a 2 seater? or would you have to get some kind of engineer's approval?
I ask as I have begun stockpiling parts and dont want to buy a back seat if i don't have to.

G'day Crisis,
Tech standards in the ACT told me that it was ok to remove the back seat and rego it as a 2 seater. Im planning on putting in 4 point harneses and just panneling the back. If you are going to go harnesses they need an enginers certificate for rego. Definatley speak to your rego guys in your state, the guy i spoke to was pretty cool and had done up a few torrys and in turn gave me quite a few tips when i was expecting them to give me the runaround.

we filled a 2 door gemini with a stupid amount of speakers/ subs etc. (yes we all chipped in and took stuff out of our own cars for this experiment) had no back seat and was frequently pulled over by the cops and never got questioned about it.
but then again our coppers couldn't care what we do
im priddy sure if you dont have anyone sitting there (like they could comfortably anyway) and its quite obvious that rear seats arn't used you should be right.
Would help if you had your location

Yeah. Sorry, I forgot to put down that I'm in Somerville, VIC.
I thought that might be the case. I never have more than 2 people in my car anyways. :-p

vic rego if you remove the back seat and make it nice and neat they cannot refuse letting you register it as a 2 seater

No probs at all in VIC. You don't even need to tell VIC Roads. Unless you're trying to get slightly cheaper rego as a 2 seater.

unless you are tight for bucks is it really worth changing the rego anyhow, you may change your mind later on and god knows what bullshit you will have to endure then

Provided the seat and seatbelt mounting points are not modified in any way, there should be no problem reverting to a 4 or 5 seater in the future.
