The donor panel fitted in really well, I But welded it with no over lapping seams.
Was also going to lead wipe the weld however it it turned out ok and was not required
It was just a fluke

One of the things about using lead is your arms will know about it I use 80 grit as the final surface prep, then scub with a small wire brush and acid . Just prior to painting make sure you clean the area well after lead wiping :spoton:
love using it :D

Thanks for your comments, not sure if you have access to a mig welder but there must be someone around your area that can assist, I would do it for you if we were'nt so far away. Most of the products we require are available over here. Like wise Im in the mining industry as well, dont know if its a good or bad thing though I enjoy it sometime

Thanks this is my first time  and i can see where I've made mistakes, however this forum and members have been a great help. Just like paint prep make sure you measure, mock up then measure again for the effort that you put in will have a result on the end finish , slow and steady. Just hope the post help those who want to give it a go

Maybe you missed your calling 2runa !

Don't underestiamte your workmanship, believe it or not people like yourself are a dying breed.

Panel beaters these days do not aquire the skills of working metal and are taught to unbolt a panel and bolt a new one in its place.

If you ever thought of getting out of the mines you got yourself a nice skill to set up business.

I always enjoy reading this thread, keep up the good work !

Just a thought for mods too, seen that we have such a great selection of photos here and i am sure there are other members with some as well
a sugestion would be to have a sticky thread that list and has photos to show other members what each factory join looks like and where it is located
on the bodywork. I am sure it will help with others embarking on a full body resto.

What do others think ?

sorry to crash your thread 2runs

I got my lead wiping kit from a panel supply shop in Perth, they were very helpful in supplying everthing i needed, There should be some where close to you that supplies it, if not PM me and i will give you the details, the lead needs to be no more than 18%. The video is good .. you sort of go oh yeah that looks easy but it requires some practise and you need to be careful of the heat : PS love the lead :spoton:

When i ordered my lead gear they could only get there hands on 60%lead 40%tin..alot harder to work with...your 82/18 would be beautiful to shape and sand

If you could post those details I'll contact your panel shop supplier and maybe he can get me closer to a distributor on my side of the country

Your work is simply OVERWHELMING..u should really be a beater mate, great work, where abouts are you located,i have my lj that needs very similar work done and i want it done good like yours NO BOG!!! I rang up a place today asked if they do lead wiping, they said its illegal..strange isnt it. You have inspired to save another toranas life (my poor lj) and more
Great work!!!!!

Yep most P/Beaters will tell you its illegal cause bog is easy :tease: however if your using the leadwiping technic treat it with respect using the correct PPE
clean your hands and face before you eat or drink as well .

Wish l had the skills of a p/beater as it would help me finish the project in half the time...... well maybe

welding and painting experience helps along with a keen eye  and years of making mistakes.

Thanks for you comments The project is moving slowly as l have another Torana on the go at the moment and it has taken prioity :D .

The skills and patients you are showing are inspirational, this is the sort of job you have a hard time trying to buy so it is left to talented people like yourself.

re the lead wiping, I used to work for telecom and the old telephone cables were all lead sheathed and we used to make up a lead sleave and wrap it around joins and then lead wipe to seal it, we used Musalin cloth (spelling sorry) to mould and shape the mouldin lead, but once you got good bare fingers. At the time I could hold my fingers in a candle flame without getting burnt, wouldn't do it now and not suggesting that you try it either. Ah yes the good old days no worries about lead posioning then lol, funny how you miss things, I really used to enjoy lead wiping, anyone else want their car done...

Keep up the great work

How much did the lead get you through. Im thinking of buying the kit and giving it a shot. But want to know how much the kit yo bought got you through. Do you do any work for other people or just personal joyment because your job is the way that so many want and should be done!

I can't remember how much a stick is worth however i would suggest 5-6 sticks would be enough just to see if you like it, takes time... and a lot more effort than bog.

I never use air or electric sanders when using lead because i try to contain the lead that is removed. Place a sheet of plastics on the floor for easy clean up and use the correct PPE.

So far all the cars that I've done are mine and to say its for enjoyment ........well that comes when you finish i hope :spoton:

Looks like plenty more opportunity to work on your lead wiping skills Posted Image .

Read through this thread from start to finish last night and was extremely impressed.

You've done a great job on the GTR, can't wait to see your XU1 thread, and to see the GTR finished.
