The "P" in the VIN suggests JP (XU-1) engine, but the disk says GTR built 20/8/73 - no engine number recorded.

the betsbac code is a human written data entry, approx 35yrs ago, possibly by a new staff member who wrote down only the 1st 3 digits of GTR XU1. who knows maybe a dozen other expl?. I believe the tag ova the written incomplete service booking. dont belittle it for it not having matching # engine, its allowed, quite normal & still a desirable car, would get 10 grand higher price if it did thats all. Make sure youre doing the thing selling it

The problem as I see it is, that if a buyer sought a verification letter from GMH (and most do) the GMH response would be "GTR" as per the BETSBAC result. Remember, only the H288865 part of the VIN is used for the "look-up".

I agree with LNC that Holden's record keeping was not the best and that the records for LC, LJ and LH are not perfect.
Remember that it was done by human computer and handwriting does vary, someone's 2 can look like a 5 etc. Besides who knew that these cars would become the icons they are today - if we all had a crystal ball for the future we would all be perfect and so would our records.
If you could put all of the Torana buffs in a room we would still only know 99% of the real history of the Torana.
Remember when you could walk into a Holden dealership and order this paint, this interior, these wheels, this motor, this gearbox, these accessories and if you were prepared to wait, you could usually get them if the dealer knew the right person in the right place in Holden.

I would be checking diff and gearbox as this would givestrange vin tag appears to be xu1 but betsbac code on disc is not
an idea if car is xu-1..human error??? tag stamped wrong??
(like john gongs GTR)
76203C..GTR
77403E...xu-1
if human error..well one number maybe but three??? or
GTR with XU-1 options..the reason i say this is on page 163
of the antoniou book there is a service letter
SUBJECT: engine modifcations and idle settings
MODELS: TORANA LJ 82900 WITH XU-1
Iam yet to see a tag that says 82900
any ideas or a printing error???

the XU1 stamped in the tag is a late 11/72 thingAccording to the vin disk NO LJ XU-1,s rolled off the Brisbane production lines on August the 17, 18, 19, 20, 21 (only GTR,s) Id be having a real hard close look at the vin tag ! And also keep in mind that from 10/72 all Brisbane built XU-1,s had XU-1 stamped into the large model, body, paint etc tag.

Gidday NutFly, I don't think you are right about the tags being stamped XU1 from 10/72. I bought a new [Brisbane] XU1 in November 1972 and it didn't have XU1 stamped on the big tag and to my knowledge the tags were not stamped until early 73.
Regards The Nut.
Just because you bought it in November does,nt mean it was a November built car ! Can you remember what build (month) 1972 car it was ? Fat Tony owns a 10/72 built car and maybe able to shed some light on things ! I was lead to believe that when the vin tags changed in 10/72 was when the Brisbane plant started stamping XU-1 into its larger Model, Body, Paint etc tag ! ( I could be wrong ).
If this car does turn out to be a genuine XU-1, then that makes one more 1973 Bathurst LJ GTR XU-1 to add to the list !!!!!!! Was,nt some wanker pumping out fake 1973 Bathurst LJ GTR XU-1,s in NSW not so long ago ????
