Hi Shaun,
Thanks for getting back to me.
Sounds like you are taking good care of her now ... I'm very glad.
Gee, the car has had a few owners (more than I though a classic would have)
It looks super clean again now and a shame the original engine was not still in her.
The widened wheels look great (better than having the cheese cutters) and are very "period".
Has the black bonnet been re-painted? It looks "gloss" now but was "satin" when we had it.
I suppose the car has been repainted again now thinking about it. 30+ years is a "stretch" and having been driven/raced a bit from the sounds of it.
Glad you still have some sort of A9X number plate too
What state of tune is the engine?
Any chance of some interior pics?
Lindsay

They weren't classics back in the day, hence why people swapped engines, etc. I knew of a guy that bought a 5000 and turned it into a pro-streeter with wheel tubs, stainless dash, etc. They just didn't have the same collector value back then.

Motor is 330 stroke with ported earlier non pollution heads and manifold , chrysler rods , CP pistons , cam , L34 quadajet , nothing really special good allrounder street performance for an ol bloke like me .
Question ??? can you remember if the motor Ian Tate built for Ray was the one from out of the car ? Hard Question I know as you were only 18 ...
These are pics before i put new door trims on and removed the pioneer stereo and put a new lower dash panel on . noticed the gear boot is different
I also removed the twin thermo fans and replaced with original , you can see through front grill on the earlier pic Tim posted.

Geeze I reckon they were potential collectable cars back in the 80,s Stephen.
If I was going to cut and modify a hatchback (now or back then) I would have used an SS or SL as a starting base rather than hack into an A9X ..... Oh, I did
Shaun,
The engine we bought the car with was Tate modified. Ray had Gown Hindough do some balancing or something to get rid of some vibs that it had !
I am only to presume that this was still the original engine as far as I know.
The seats have been re-trimmed again from the look of the pics.
And yes, we had the chrome surround bolted around the gear stick boot.
Good to say the quaddie is back on
What is the story with the paint ... re bonnet etc ?
How many kms has it done now ?
Do you drive it much?

Ha Ha thanks Dave but not as colourful as yours !
had one of the best days in it last weekend as a passenger shaun
young pete did about 220 km in it
could not get the p plates to stay upright so we gave up!
took to it like a duck to water
and opened his eyes somewhat!
was surprised to get a 100km in 1st and pull from 50km in top
he could not believe how tractable and effortless it pulled
it weighs 250kg less than his little wrx
made me very proud of my car and my son
do it all again on saturday before he goes home on monday
cheers davemc

The previous owner told me he resprayed it in 2005 just before I bought it , yes the bonnet is gloss and should not be , I usually get it out before the battery goes flat say every 2 or 3 months and when I do it's usually for a few hours drive , currently 193,000 kms but in the 10 years in my care I,Ve only clocked up 3000 of those k,s
I would like to give it a full nut and bolt resto one day but there are other priorities ATM , it's not perfect or concourse , some small blisters in paintwork in a couple of spots , Nothing too serious.
Will have it out this Sunday as going for a cruise with 3 mates and there Torana,s
I,Ve kept all the bits that I have changed including the 2.60 diff parts which is now 3.08 . It's a difficult decision what period afterparts to leave on or off , can,t imagine changing the T10 or L34 spec engine , I think there keepers.
Hi Dave ,
You need to get Pete to drive his inheritance over to the east coast so I can have a look , maybe swap drives ?

I would not change a thing, the perfect setup.

Geeze I reckon they were potential collectable cars back in the 80,s Stephen.
Everybody wanted one, no question about it but those were the days when most could only afford one car so if you wanted extra power, etc. you didn't think twice, you just modded the only car you had and the mindset back then was that you were increasing its value, lol. Oh how times have changed.
The ads in the trading post back then would start off with what the car was, i.e. SL/R 5000 then there'd be a few paragraphs below with all the mods and it actually made them sell quicker because everyone wanted a car that was 'improved' from factory.

Hi Shaun,
The car certainly has been "enjoyed and driven" by all of the previous owners to clock up those k's
Great to hear that she has found a really good home for now. 3,000kms in 10 years. That's showing a fair bit of restraint
I would leave her "as she is" as not having the original engine would really defeat the purpose of a full resto.
As is, a perfect muscle car with being over done or under done
Keep in touch Shaun as I'd love to see her again ..... if I'm down Canberra way or you're up my way (both unlikely scenarios I'm thinking)
Appreciate the catching up and reminiscing.
