Starfire Rods

Hi all have come across a set of Starfire rods and i have a few questions.. They are numbered 1 to 6 on the bottom of each one. I presume thats firing order one to six? Numbers 2 and six have a different GMH number stamped on them from the other 4. They are 32ANF & 32BNF respectively.. The other 4 rods are stamped BH2J2.. You can see in the pics that there is a slight difference with the height of metal left above the gudgen pin hole on the two odd ones compared to the other 4.. I have individually weighed each one, and all but one of them are 561grams. The odd one is number 2 and its 564grams.. Will the three grams make a lot o difference ? and if i have to take it off, where should i take it from ? Cheers shep

The rods need to be balanced properly. Some weight will need to come off the little end, and some off the big end. 3 Grams isn't too much, take the pistons and rods and everything else that hangs off the crank and get it balanced by an engine reconditioner.

I think you will find that is 1st cylinder back from water pump, 2nd, 3rd etc, not firing order. But I mean if they are going in a completely different engine I don't think it really matters how they were set up in the old block.They are numbered 1 to 6 on the bottom of each one. I presume thats firing order one to six?

Star fire rods are 4cyl right, so you will get a varience in cast numbers etc with different vintage, say 4 rods are from one motor from say 1977 and you two more rods to make six. One could be from a 1978 motor and another from 1980 etc.
As above it doesnt really matter just have them measured and ballanced.
If they are numbered 1 to 6 then they have been previously installed in a 6cyl.

All blue and black sixes used Starfire Rods.

^ o.k. they use the same rods but starfire is a 4cyl right?

Yes, they were fitted in Red Starfires I believe. But then they realised they were better so stuck em in the Blue/Black sixes.

Starfires were only blue.

Very useful information as I have just obtained 6 Starfire rods and I would have asked the same question as _shep3305_
I haven't weighed them yet, but I will, and will have them dressed and balanced with the rotating components

Starfires were only blue.
No, UC Starfires were silver.
VC/VH "Phase II" Starfires were blue.
