Sports Luxury/Rally was what I always heard back in the day. (1980's)
These days for some reason many claim it to be Sports, Luxury/Racing and when you think about it, it really doesn't make as much sense.
Sports and Racing are done on the same track whereas Rally is a totally different terrain, the SL/R being versatile for the Track, Road & Off-Road.
LC/LJ's were used a lot in rally and Holden didn't foresee back then that the larger LH/LX wouldn't turn out to be all that popular on rally tracks, by the 80's rally drivers shifted favour to smaller Euro/Japanese cars.

Whatever the R meant in GTR it will most likely be the same as the R in SLR. Both GTR and SLR are referred to as Sports Sedans in GMH literature (with the GTR qualified as a 2-door Sports Sedan).
