Hi Guys,

I have been doing a lot of reading on brake upgrades for toranas, and I have decided to give it a go. I have a pair of HX one tonner stubs, Girlock alloy calipers, UC steering arms and HX rotors. Whilst I was dismantling the HX front stubs at the local wreckers, I noticed that this tonner had PBR alloy calipers. To me they looked just like the Torana PBR alloy calipers, so I decided to compare them. I unbolted the calipers from a handy UC and had a good look at them. Physically the section of the calipers which retains the piston is identical to the Torana caliper, same size piston, part number etc. Except that the inlet house is positioned on the inside of the caliper on the HX, and the torana one has it near the bleed nipple. Both bleed nipples were in the same location. The other thing that I noticed was that the cast iron section which holds the brakes shoes is the same barr, the HX one is larger, making allowances for the extra thickness of the HX rotor and the HX had 'Holden' the other 'Torana' cast into it. The Torana brake pads were smaller, in surface area. Other than that, the HX alloy PBR bolted up to the Torana stub axles, and the Torana alloy PBR caliper bolted up to the HX stub axle. I then compared the Girlock alloy caliper, they both weighed about the same, however the surface area of the HX alloy PBR brake shoe is larger than a HX Girlock brake shoe. The other thing that I looked at was the clearance that the alloy PBR caliper gave the tie rod end, there is plenty of room with no grinding required. This may be a question for Dattoman, but can some one tell me whether the alloy PBR is an inferior product. I also have access to a set of Steel PBR HQ calipers, how do they compare to the Girlock calipers??

Any help would be good.

PS: This wreckers has two complete HZ disc brake diff's if anyone is interested.

It was a common conversion to put the Alloy PBR caliper onto Toranas
Use the HQ stub and the Torana caliper body but use the HX cast cradle
Then he hoses don't need modifying and the thing takes a vented disc
Use the HX pad too as the friction material is higher up obn the backing plate

However. They are a crap caliper
The HZ Girlock alloy is not much better
Any aluminium claw/collect style caliper can flex
Cast iron ones do now
So I'd personally go for the Cast HQ one myself

Thanks Dattoman. Looks like I'll be going for the steel PBRs.
