Hey guys, probably particularly Dattoman.
I need a remote brake booster set up in my LJ as there is bugger all room left on my firewall for the booster. I have been told I can opt for a remote brake booster setup which can mount in the boot?? Is this correct?
Anyhow what is involved? Is it correct i need a VH40 booster? where would i buy one? A brake and clutch place i suspect.
I have HQ discs up front and VN discs out back, would this mean 2 remote boosters? As iv been told.
Thanks guys

Yep two boosters required for a vehicle with rear discs.Basically the brake lines from the m/cy go to each remote booster, front line to one booster, rear line to the other booster with vacuum line from engine to them.Dattoman will know for sure.

Reasonably sure japxu1 had pics of his setup in the boot in his thread.

You wont need 2 boosters..the VH40's have 3 outlets, 2 front and 1 for the rear that would run to a Tee piece and split off left and right.

If you are out of room and wish to delete the original booster and M/C you can fit a single circuit M/C to the firewall, brake and Vacuum line goes to the VH40, then brake lines go left ,right and out the back as previosly described.

The problem comes with the size of pistons in your calipers....if HQ pistons are the same size as VN then its OK...if they are different you will need to set up a proportioning valve.

Some people hide the remote booster under the guard...but Its not a friendly place if you ask me.

that makes it clearer, i rang a brake place today and they quoted me $395 each booster (2 boostes) with lines and tubes etc. Does this sound like a good price?

If you use 1 unit and a single master it defeats the purpose of dual circuit brakes
It won't work properly and its illegal

You will need 2
Its possible to fit them behind the headlights under the front guards of an LJ
Dags350 has this setup on his car with exactly the same brakes your using Bart

I sell the VH40/44 style boosters for $350 plus brackets and fittings
You want to pick the right one though as they are all different
The ones you need are VH44 based units
Maybe a VH44 for the back and a VH44J for the front
They run different bore sizes and output pressures you see

Ask Dags for pics of his mountings and pipework... should find it helpful

Will a 7" dual diaphragm booster give you enough clearance?

that looks like it may do the trick, although i have to see if even the brake booster bracket will fit on the firewall, if it does (ill check tomorrow) it will do the trick.

I just checked out Hydroboost website and the VH booster are cheaper, by at least $100.

myss427, mate you should ring Hydroboost as Terry should steer you in the right direction and there boosters are a good price as nunganunga has indicated.
That booster you ask may be a Ford XA/XB as Terry at Hydroboost told me today Toranas with bigblocks use.
Ring Terry at Hydroboost 03 93904811, he sounds like a nice guy to talk to and very helpfull. http://www.hydroboost.com.au/index.htm

You can buy the chrome and paintable Hotrod 7" dual diaphragm boosters from Dattoman or anyone into Hotrod brakes eg. Hopper Stoppers. The booster takes a GM pattern master cylinder so you can use your exising master and prop valve. My booster is stainless steel, I have only seen them on eBAY. I bought mine from Parts4u4less but they do not have any listed at the moment.

7" Stainless Boosters on eBay

Booster fitting kit from Summit.
SUM-760125

Alloy check valve from Summit.
SUM-G1467

SSBC Billet Aluminium master cylinder from Summit. It has outlets on both sides. I intend to run the lines on the RHS of the master.
SSB-A0468-2

I did buy the SSBC adjustable proportioning valve SSB-A0730 but found it did not have a brake fail indicator switch (ADR 31) so I returned it and bought a Classic Performance 4WD proportioning valve and wiring connector from Summit.
CLP-PV-4 ( This part number is just the prop valve without wiring, brakets or pipes )
CLP-SP015130

SSBC will have an adjustable proportioning valve with brake fail indicator available early 2008.

okydoky
As shown in the pics above there isnt much room to play with. Further discussion with Terry at Hydroboost, he recomended using a master cylinder from a Ford which is a high fill, ie a little more compact unit to clear the turbo exhaust pipe or use a master with a remote reservoir.

Can you not use a cantilever and position it up out of the way ?

Similar to the original boosted setup but non boosted

Ill have a think about it, meanwhile i have to complete the exhaust manifolds

In that situation I would use a twin cylinder pedal box that locates everything on the inside of the firewall. I'm sure Datto could help you out with pics, prices etc.

hmmm Struggler i thought of that once but then the thought of getting under the dash (the part of the car i hate most) really turns me off. I would do that only if there was no other option, so far it looks to be a good idea to have the m/c on the original position with remote reservoir, i think. Ill check out ABS today if i get a chance but also have a trip to Rocket. Goto go :D

Since I have to use remote boosters and mount the master directly onto the firewall, does this mean the brake pedal push rod have to be pivoting on the lower mounting hole? Because the original position pulls the push rod but the lower pivot pushes the push rod. (I noticed there is another hole on the brake pedal a few inches lower to mount the push rod). Does this mean I have to drill another hole in the firewall couple of inches lower for the pushrod to go through?
Any pics of the master cylinder mounted on a LJ without booster would be great; I was told it was like the early model torana's which had no booster.
