Howdy,

Rocket found the problem with my non functional horn. The relay has been bashed with something and is severely damaged. All I need is another one.

I have it on good authority that Repco or similar should stock these units but when I went there the young bloke just looked at me blanky and said "Call Holden". I guess if was looking for a set of sub woofers or some polish he would have been able to help. Needless to say I was rather pissded off at his lack of helpfulness, he could have at least looked up a catalogue or something. Maybe I should try the more help Repco at Wynnum... anyway enough ranting.

Has anyone else bought an after market relay and if so where from? Part number or brand would be helpful too. I tried a few online dudes but all the horn relays seem to be 4 pin, not 3.

Thoughts or suggestions?

Cheers,

T

Doesn't matter how many pins are on the original, virtually any relay will work, only a matter of where the wires go.
Using a Bosch plugin relay use the following,
Terminal 85 to earth
Terminal 86 to horn switch wire
Terminal 30 to 12vdc
Terminal 87 to horn

I think if you only have 3 terminals it will be earthed internally from the body of the relay.
All other wires should already be their.

This is a diagram of a standard bosch 4 pin relay as you would use on driving lights and stuff.

I think the colours might be right? though this is from LH/LX and yours is UC?
Check which green has power before you start.

The standard relay probably has 86 and 30 bridged internally??

LX2DR Might want to confirm?

Have battery terminal loose and "000"FIRE on speed dial :spoton:

Rodomo's correct :furious: Gotta hate that!
I forgot the horn button switches the earth :fool:
So, as he said.
Terminal 85 to earth via horn contact
Terminal 86 to 12vdc
Terminal 30 to 12vdc
Terminal 87 to horn
The other way is for normal stuff like spotlights etc

Cool, thanks guys.

I understand the diagram except for the two 12vdc connections. I just had a look at the wiring on the car and it was connected with a 3 slot female plug. How do I get the one 12vdc wire (power wire) I have currently (sparky joke... get it?) to go into two terminals (86 and 30)? Do I just splice the power wire so I then have two wires for 86 and 30?

One of these days it will click and I will get a grasp of auto electrics, until then I have the fire extinguisher at the ready. :D

Okay, I've had a closer suss out of this here relay do-dad. Its a Mitsuba unit which I dont believe is standard UC. I would have though it would be the same as an LX. My thoughts are that somewhere along the line the horn has been replaced (Mitsuba do horns as well) along with the relay. The horn works fine as tested. If I can get a standard 4 pin relay to work the thats cool, I save a few bucks if not I will chuck some airhorns on the beast which come with a new relay anyway.

When you go to crimp your power wire to term. 86, you join another piece of wire to go to term. 30 as well.

(Poke power wire and another piece of spare wire into your crimp terminal)

Effectively you use the power wire terminal to join the wires. (Power + other spare)

Then the "other spare" piece of wire connects to 30

Get the picture??

Before you cut up your loom.

Go to the wreckers and get half a dozen.

They are fitted to most period Holdens and should last forever.

If you are still in trouble, send me a PM (address) and I will send you one from SA on the weekend.

Cheers

Cheers,
