Hi all,
I had this idea this morning,
was looking at a Volvo that my uncle used to drive,
is now sitting unregistered and going no where, auto gearbox needs a rebuild.

It goes like this,
Volvo has 15 inch mags,
that are same pcd as Torana,
The volvo also has rear disc brakes,
So,
Ideas
Number 1.
Fit volvo rear disc to a Torana Diff,
mounting plates may need modification,
have not removed the wheels yet to work out the finer details,
Number 2.
The disc to disc width of the Volvo diff is approx 1400mm,
again, did not have the tools to remove both rear wheels
and measure the width accurately.

So need to know the width of a LH LX Diff,
and the rules on modifications to disc caliper mounting plates.

Cheers
Chris.

EDIT.
I borrowed this picture from another thread,
these are the 5 spoke Volvo wheels I was talking about

i reckon youd be better off measuring the length of the volvo diff more accuratly and then going from there, you might get lucky the estimated length could be close, as for your first idea if you were to redrill the backing plates i think you might weaken them, let us all know how you go with all your measurements as i think i heard somewhere that those volvo diffs were reasonably strong and i reckon theyd be alot lighter then a bloody 9 inch

Street Machine or Perth Street Car had an article about 12 years ago on Volvo diff conversions as a budget diff upgrade for the LH/LX Torana.

LX8VD69,
I was leaning towards the second idea,
I will take some ramps to my uncles,
so I can get good pics of the diff centre,
it is bloody huge.
If I did modify the backing plates,
would probably get my mate to cut the centres out of the torana ones I have,
(boilermaking and fabrication is his field)
and get him to weld them into the volvo ones,
not sure,
I would get his opinion on the best way of doing it.

ls2lxhatch,
thanks for the tip,
any ideas on finding the article?

Cheers
Chris

Hi Chris, this is an idea I have thought about too.

I remember reading an article on an LX sedan that ran Volvo turbo diff
and Leyland P76 V8. (not sure of box) I do recall reading that the diff
conversion was very easy.

Quite a few people will no doubt be watching this one mate!

Or you could just go UC.. :D

Leakey

this would serve no purpose as UC salisbury diffs apperantly ran banjo internals, but you are right about alot of people watching this thread :spoton: :spoton:

More info,
the donor car is an 1983 Volvo Station wagon,
Model type, not a clue.
the other article meantioned
LH diff housing 1320mm,
But what I am looking for is the length from
wheel mounting face to wheel mounting face of a Torana Diff.
Leaky,
I got a setup off a UC disc to disc,
but the calipers are shot, need to be rebuilt and sleved,
that is very pricey.
But an easy diff conversion sounds great to me,
as the donor car is taking up space in the back yard of my aunts place,
and she wants it gone, means it is going cheap.
More later
Cheers
Chris.

Chris...keep reading...what you want to know I think is BUF..bolt up face...

From Chopper

If you measure the distance from BUF to BUF, it won't be the same as the track.

Assorted BUF measurements:

LH - UC: 1435 mm
VK II & VL: 1526 mm
Most VN: 1546 mm

I didn't bother with the L34/A9X measurement, as it's fairly unlikely you'll find one.

Thats 17mm each side wider than you have measured..so you are 5/8" shoter each side if you measurements are right..thats a good thing! :spoton:

rorym,
that is exactly what I was looking for,
We are going to jack up the back of the volvo,
and measure the BUF to BUF,
the rough measurements don't cut it,
We where looking for a ball park to start,
Cut down diffs are fine if you spend big cash.
this Volvo diff looks pretty big,
and the calipers look way better than the UC ones.
Cheers
Chris.

DANA diffs on the import ones.....Looked good except for this line.

Reports of Dana LSDs behind modded V8s are not good.

Hey ls2lxhatch,
that is an awesome piece of engineering,
great photos.
Quote,
1031 - From around 1981 onwards.
The Volvo is a 1983 model, so should have a 1031 diff centre.
Will get back to it on Monday.

Cheers
Chris.

Volvo diffs are used heavily in hotrodding circles with few complaints, so you must only be talking about mega-hp V8s Rory?
All Dana diffs are solid units, obviously the IRS versions being more sought after.
The BW78 is discontinued AFAIK, so check availability of parts. Later BW bits don't fit.

Grant...just quoting the link that was posted.
Chris,
VL-VS /R31 Skyline/EA -? Falcon.
I have one in the new car and am looking at a KAAZ centre for it maybe,Not sure the spool is the go for some of the tight circuits.

Guys, a Dana Volvo diff isnt much lighter than a 9".

I never weighed them properly, but I'd guess there would be less than 10kg between them.

Cheers.

9" weight reduction options.

Aluminium carrier. 10 kg. ( $500 )
Moser axles ? kg. ( $600+ )
Custom fabricated housings ? kg. ( $1000+ )

I doubt there is any significant difference in weight between the 9" and the BW or Volvo Dana although 9" axle and housing weights vary significantly. I am confident that fitting an aluminium carrier would make the 9" lighter.

I will weigh my 9" next time it is out.

Mine has cast carrier and 31 spline axles, in a thick wall Housing. Probably about as heavy as they come, in little Torana width anyway.

Hey guys,
I will be back over looking at the Volvo tomorrow,
going to put in on some ramps and take more pictures,
also going to try out a 14 inch Dragway on it,
see if it fits over the discs.

the BW78, probably got one of them under my daily driver,
Got an ED Falcon last week to drive to and from work,
Hey I konw its a ford, but has 140,000kms for $3000.

Another question,
How much inpact does the weight of the wheels and diff have on the performance of a vehicle, eg on an LX Torana with a 253 and auto.

Also weight comparison, 9 inch vs LX Banjo.
how much difference?

Cheers
Chris.

In performance it wont make a huge diference.

Handling it may, because the unsprung mass makes a much bigger difference to sprung mass.

Hi all,
did more research today on the volvo,
dif width BUF to BUF 1398mm, so 1400mm for round figures.
The standard steel wheels for it are 14 inch,
So I did fit up a 14 inch Dragway to the rear end,
looked funny, Volvo with a 5 spoke on it.

Posted Image

The UC Hatch looked better than that with the Volvo mags on it.

Posted Image

Anyway got some pics of the diff centre, as well as the trailing arms,
and torsion bar on the rear of the diff.

Extra Pics of Volvo diff and UC with Volvo mags

Cheers
Chris
