fiv antoniou book page 111 should not have hx for the 72 bathurst car.

Long time no hear?? glad your still about. It's getting to the stage where we will be to scared of driving our cars the way things are going. Lucky we both get them out and give them a bit of a thumping. That day we went to Phillip island with shaun(830hp) and yourself along with others was a real treat.
talk soon.

I am finding this all very interesting.
Am I correct in assuming that the '72 Bath cam referred to in the Antoniou book as the HX is actually the XJ and the HX/XH is the standard cam dating from early '72?
We have a couple of examples of HX/XH cams being fitted to '73 Bathurst cars - I find this very surprising since according to the Antoniou book - the '72 Bathurst cam became the standard cam thereafter.
Maybe the truth is somewhere in between? and oh, don't believe everything you read.

Hi Jamie,
As you probably know, we ground all the Holden XU1 grinds for GMH. Our records show the XH (373)XU1 and XJ(391)Bathurst XU1 are both GM profiles.

HiDo we know what the standard cam was in the early 72 XU-1 before the 72 Bathurst cam became the standard thereafter ?
It appears to be this one - commonly known as the XH or HX. There seems to be some doubt whether the later one ('72 Bathurst XJ) did become the standard because a couple of late '72 and even '73 Bathurst owners say their cars came with the earlier '72 HX/XH. The part number below is the only XU-1 cam mentioned in the late '73 parts catalogue.

original timing gear , but this engine was also from a 73 bathurst police car .
so in saying this the police cars might of had the standard xu1 camshaft ..

My listed 73 bathurst came with the standard xu1 cam.
Also seen a JP389 unlisted 8/73 with standard cam, if fact standard whole engine.

Thanks for that info. It is starting to look like only the relevant homologated '72 Bath came out with the "hot" XJ cam and everything thereafter continued to be fitted witht he standard HX/XH cam. That appears to make the Antoniou book wrong.
Are there any other '73 Bath owners that can with "hand on heart" say that their car left the factory with the XJ cam?

No, exactly the opposite, the current forum thinking is that the early '72 used the 373/XH/.429 lift camshaft. Then the '72 Bathurst batch were fitted with the 391/XJ/.456 lift cam. It appears that many '73 XU-1 (the magic 150 included) had the smaller XH cam fitted. Maybe GM-H reverted to the XH cam for ALL '73 production.are u suggesting that the 72 bathurst xu1 was fitted with a 391 cam same as the 73 bathurst listed cars
I would tend to believe this theory because it didn't matter which cam the '73 XU-1s came with from the factory, under the then new Group C rules they could fit any cam they wanted for racing.
Also, Holden had many warranty complaints about rough running & overheating in traffic when the XU-1s were new. It would have made sense for them to fit the smaller cam & therefore less hassles & warranty claims costs.

Holden would of been looking after there pockets, given that it was a real CRANKY CAM the XH or HX cam was less of a headache for Warranty claims.
