Has anyone who is running an rb used the original engine fan and shroud?? Also can soemone take a pic of how they mounted their radiator? cheers

As in the RB radiator? I have used the original VL radiator un-modified for my car. The reason for this is if I go for a long drive and the radiator gives up, well I just get a standard VL one and slip it straight in. I have also used the standard RB33 top hose and the Standard VL bottom hose both have been trimmed. I also use the standard RB33 fan and the shroud.

The VL fan shroud still needs some trimming, but once it's in it looks like a factory fit, You can see the pics in the RB30 supercharged thread. If you need more pics info, just PM me. You can also call me any time on 0432171482, Paul.

Dean

Yeh things got a bit slow for a while due to lack of funds (you'd know all about that ) soon as i had more $$ and time, things took off again

Still got a bit to do before its on the road ,then after all that still need to get a paint job ,lucky brother in-law is a ex-car painter or that would have been ages away !

How is your car going Dean, have you got your gear box issues sorted now?

if so have you run over the 1/4 with the new set-up ?

Thread steal - Alrighty, who is putting their hands up for the How to Install and RBXX into your LC/J or LH/X/UC??
Start with what is required - pumps, sensors, engine, etc
How to get it is - mount mods etc, where you sourced all the bits, extractors, etc
Leave all Turbo stuff to the end.

Can I have a show of hands? Mix and match of everyone's pics?

PM sent about doing the conversion. If I was to type a whole thread including details/part numbers and where to source all the parts, what section would I post it up in?

I thought that there would be enough info on the thread I've made and along with other peoples thread or where you after all info on one place?

Wouldn't a thread on the conversion just disappear anyway after a while?

I wanted to have as much info and pic's in my thread ,the sort of info that i would have liked to have had "before" starting this conversion, personaly i would not "put my hand up" as i dont think just "my" conversion details would be good enough for a sort of "how to" thread

I would have thought we would all have to contribute to a more "official" thread as we have all done different things, and used different gearboxes etc

For instance, Studricho's thread has helped me with some great ideas etc along the way,but i would not get all the info "I" needed for my build from it ,and im sure Studricho would say the same about my thread on the same subject, Brett and Dean + others also.

The best way may be to extract all the "chit-chat" from all RB to Torrie threads ,and copy what is left over that is informative and on topic ,then put it all in one place

readers can then use the info they see most relevent to what they would like to do,or use the different info to make a choice about what will be best for them ?

I would be happy to offer any help or info for this type of thread if it all goes ahead, or you could just make Studricho a mod and just let him do it ! (ha-ha)

Lol, I needed that giggle. I've been in a world of pain with back issues of late.

I agree 100% what you said about a collective thread.

The thread wouldn't disappear, it would be Stickied and probably turned into an article in the Torviki...

Great idea if you ask me, I think we should do one for all of the common conversions. RB30, EFI V8, 9" Diffs, gearboxes etc...

A new forum was requested for conversions, but they can go into the Engine and Driveline threads.

Guys,
stop to think how you went about the process, what you needed, how you did it, what you would have done differently?
Then trim the bits from the RB threads (paste em into Word or something :D ) then start an RB into an LC or LX or whatever thread in the Engine forum - you could even make it encompass all models with the fitting section split between the two types LC/J & LH/X/UC.
Then you can shoot the shit and make adjustments to the process to get it spot-on!

Once there is something straight forward and understandable we (or you) can post it as a Tech Article.

Check out the Tech Article for UC rear discs on an LX and see how it is split into the "this is what you need" and "this is how it's done" sections.

The Admin team would LOVE to do all this themselves, but we gotta run the forum, and chastise Bomber and stuff. And we haven't performed the cinversion ourselves.

Yeah, fair enough. My brain is a bit mushy at the moment from these great pain killers for a recent back injury, so I'm out for a while. Hard enough to type this. Even working on the Torana is hard. I had to measure the tail saft size about 6 times to lock it in eddie.

I don't no where I'd be without auto spell check. I'll give it a crack once I'm feeling normal again.

Off Topic ..

Paul, my best mate hurt his back,he took some pills ,within 2 days he was working again,in this time his back had not recovered, and he then hurt it REAL bad.

Even with physio he could not walk straight for over a 12 months ,over 3 years later he can walk OK, but still needs Physio.

If you are in pain typing on the PC, it may not be a good idea to force yourself to work on your car, your body is telling you to rest mate !.... listen to it or you may not ever get to enjoy driving your car, even when its finished.....

On Topic..

Grant,

I would like to help in any way with the "how to" thread , i would however ,id like to finish my conversion before i get into that more,so at least i can add some HP or 1/4 mile times and be able to confirm that the engine and box didn't fall out the first time i drove it (LOL) plus this will give me and others a bit more time to prepare maybe?

Also i need to show that i could get it registerd in QLD and what i did to make it legal (different laws to meet in each state, another reson why we should all contribute)

I will update my current thread soon with relevent stuff with pic's on this,so when the time comes the info is here to be weeded through ! (and geeez, hasn't it got some weeds now,HA!)

I know where your coming from MT you can rest assured that I am listening to my body. When I say that it's hard enough to work on the Torana I mean that my brain is mush from the meds and I don't function mentally quick at the moment. I'm not doing any heavy lifting whatsoever. 5 kilo's is my max. I can work slowly for about an hour now and then I need to rest for about the same amount of time. I have little nanna naps midday and I'm listening to all medical advice.

I do appreciated your concern...I can feel the love...(jokes)

Got some pic's of my Surge tank set-up.

To be legal in QLD and avoid any fuel smell entering the cabin (caused by having rubber fuel lines that "breathe" in the boot area) i will be using a custom style "approvable" (as in, i can get Surge Tank ,engineer/Blue Plate certified) type of set up.

This tank allows all rubber line to be "outside" the boot area, but also allow use of a large vertical tank, without trying to fit it under the car.

You do have to cut a hole (around 60mm Dia) in the boot floor for the pipe's to protrude.

As you can see all inlet/outlets are on the bottom, and it has different lenth tubes inside the tank that raise to different hights, to allow draining or filling at certain levels of fuel within the surge tank itself.

This pic shows what it looks like in the boot.

Showing tank pipes as they exit underneath car.

After connection,(before painting) i had not painted black yet,so that it is clearer to see in the pic.

Some sweet looking engine bays there. I noticed where you fitted all your pumps and stuff mumstaxi. Very interesting. Are you concerned that in a rear shunt it could go up?

The key is all pumps are properly fused, so power will be cut in a instant to pumps if the power feed is shorted out, not much different to having normal towbar trailer plug hanging there with live power when the lights/brakes are on ?

As you would know already, fuel vapour is way more volatile than fuel as a liquid, most cars these days have the fuel pump (and power wires) submersed "IN" the fuel.

My main concerns (in any crash) are to cut power to the pump to remove any "sparking" ignition source, plus stop pump pumping fuel all over the place,so buy the fuse blowing it does both without me having to even turn the key off.

That big black bar you can see in the pic is a Tow Bar that will remain on the car so will offer more protection also.

But yes, it is a reminder that saftey should NOT ever be overlooked with any conversion on any car.

Looking at that too, I would think you may have issues with certification. Let us know how you go.

Maybe find a rollover switch from a euro car (Big Red Button under Pug 206 bonnets) that shuts the power to the fuel system down in a rollover/big shunt. Just don't get airborn, as the bump on landing shuts it down too!!.

And to think i only did all this to make it legal ! , i know from the past tho , legal won't automaticly mean safe.

I belive it safe or i would not have done it that way,i felt it a much better option than having it all very close to the diff housing or near exhaust etc.

My old fuel system was all in the boot, and was told by the engineer, that is not the way to have it,(and the Battery is in the boot now also) i considered spare wheel cavity but it is right next to the exhaust, and to find a area to have all the stuff and the surge tank outlets poke through the floor was not easy.

Its still gotta pass the engineer + roadworthy dudes, they have the final say, if they are not 100% happy i will get "them" to change it (easy for me then,ha !) let you know.
