LC GTR w/speed way engine -
select third and nail it, watch mumstaxi in other lane drift backward out of rear quarter window.
Low flying jet goes over......No, that's mumstaxi now twenty carlengths ahead in my lane. :D

To be honest I really didn't hit it very hard but the outcome would have been the same.
(Used up this years birthday drive of Lucy - Ms_Cameo_gold's GTR :D )

Thanks for popping round, engine bay looks awesome, and I sure it will inspire a new rash of RB conversion!

:P he-he

Hope it doesn't sound like a jet tho Grant ?,from what ive been told its not that loud under acceleration, but ive never been beside it in another car to hear.

Great to catch up with you and the family mate, GTR is great, and sounds awsome.

And for a car that has not been driven for months,i was impressed by how nice it ran and how very little soot it blew, you gotta talk the wife round to getting it up to willowbank,or does she have to talk you round im not sure ? (ha) :tease:

yeah, ine doesnt sound nuch like a vl. but the electric fuel pump kind of gives it away. although some people still ask what the engine is as cruise nights.

Hi Brett,

If the inlet manifold you are talking about is the one you have always had on the car, i would be very hesitant to "bin" that mate, its not that big that it will be causing heaps of lag, and looks like quite a nice design, (not sure what size throttle body you are using tho ?)
Many other factors such as plenum (as you have mentioned) cooler & pipework, exhaust and tune etc can play a big part in how a certain turbo will react on a perticular engine, but personally i don't think 10psi by 3400 is "that" bad, did you have it re tuned with the new turbo tho?
Thought your car has already ran 115MPH with the old turbo/set-up,it is obviously is quite a good engine package and would have to have been good for low 12's ?
I guess it all depends what are you trying to achieve with a turbo/plenum change ?
MT

not having an auto and stall converter means the earlier the boost comes on the better for me.

i have just changed the ecu and injectors, waiting for the software so i can start playing with thew tune. cutout will be increased to 7000 so at least ill have a wider rev range to work with.

new turbo was bolted into existing exhaust housing. .9 AR

i know its a much bigger compressor wheel (was 53 now 61mm) but i thought the ball bearings would have made up for that.
oh well, its only 200 or so revs slower to come on boost than before and should make a shit load more power once its sorted

this irs should be ready to go in soon, will fit after easternats, and then maybe if i find a spare weekend i will swap over the intake manifolds.

I have now come to the unfortunate conclusion that my surge tank is actually the cause of my 1/4 mile surge problem ! (so it really is a "surge" tank)

I took the car down to get dyno tuned, started off ok making 270-280hp on only 10psi but then leaned out so much the tuner quite rightly called a "fuel supply problem", and As it turns out the internal overflow/return pipe inside the surge tank was made hardly any higher than the one that feeds the pump :fool: , in simple terms, my supposed 2.5 litre(ish) surge tank could not even retain as much fuel as a standard coffee cup ! so consequently its fuel reserve would run out pretty bloody fast.

I guess credit must go to the little Pierburg lift pump (the same one id suspected as a posable cause of the surge) that it could keep up feeding the high pressure pump for as long as it did

Ok, going from advice from a few members, i wanted to contact leigh (jap xu1) about mounts ,sump etc for my conversion , i could not seem to contact him by ,Mobile, landline,PM, left my Number ,all with no reply ?
shame cos from the pic's i have come across his work looked fantastic.

MT

Yes leigh, that was actually "me" looking for you ^^, in the end i gave up trying to get in touch with you (i did try all measures in the above quote) but i had no way of knowing you were just having a bit of time off, a answering machine message to tell anyone you had gone on holidays would not have gone astray, and i never did ever receive a call back from any of the messages id left for you ??? and this also turned me off enquiring about any other things i needed later, like a high mount Turbo manifold etc.

I have to admit i was dissapointed, anything you have done seems to come highly reccomended by many, and i would have liked to had the opportunity to have found that out for myself, CRS answered my first ph call, so off i went, sorry.

Anyway for anyone else who may go through this thread, or for the one day all the RB theads may get merged into one, it would be appreciated if you had any pic's showing off the quality of your mounts and or sumps or any other relevent RB into Torana conversion parts that you would care to promote, and feel free to add all your details or a link to a web site etc.

Ahhh I see you found the Torana forums Mumstaxi, took me a while to work out I recognised the car. I am still hoping to have mine ready for the drag day if I ever get off my butt. Might need to find a new job first though

HA-Haaaa !.......hay mate.

well,i found 1 Torana forum (the best 1 i think) only been on here since "07", was on one other older holden forum before this ,but gave that one away because of
new people that joined up and just posted (im sure without reading) in every thread they could find ?

On the net it seems 2 cents can quickly turn into a $1.50 when you shout buy typing with your fingers, so i left the "Captain Keyboards" fighting the "Keyboard Warriors" :shoot:

I hope you do have the Torrie going by the drag day, but going by your past record youl excuse me if i don't get to excited yet :tease:

So what do you think to the ToRBana (torana with RB in it) its come a long way in 08, had to put some big 185s under the rear today, 175/75/13s are getting VERY hard to find !

The new tyres do seem surprisingly sticky tho, well, compared to the 6yr old crusty ones i took off (LOL) ......i can feel a whopping "2.0" 60ft comin on now !

I saw you at Munchies the other night but by the time we walked back you were gone. Hey can't rush these things I have at least another 100 excuses to go yet, I'm actually aiming to have it done by the end of feb. I even uncovered it the other day and started it.

You would have to think yours would rattle off a low 12/ high 11 easy with the setup, might have to squeeze the power on though haha mine only does 2.0s so I might keep up to the 60s at least. All the seat belt fun starts at 11.99 though don't forget

Ok so after the second time on the Dyno the car ended up leaving the "Tuner" with just short of 350HP @ 20psi (more boost than i was running) i was a bit disapointed as i expected around 400, but as Dyno figures are not everything ,i thought it may well go better ?

To my utter dissapointment it was tooooootally GAY! :nudie: i did not even get half way home before i pulled the laptop out and re-loaded "my tune" to drive the rest of the way home, thing was, because the car was going so slow, id forgot the boost had been turned up a bit.

Fortunately id had the tune quite "fat" up top, so on my tune (now running 20 psi ) the car went a bit better than before, but surged up top, the surge this time was caused by too much fuel as i had fattened it up higher in the revs when searching for the original surge/leaning out caused by the surge tank.

So after leaning out the top end plus tweaking a few things it now goes a bit more like a car that has a GT42 on 20psi should, i have now resolved myself to the fact that i am better off to finish the tune on this thing myself ! :violent085:

You should be making 600hp+ with a gt42 on 20psi, something fundamental must be wrong with your engine or turbo system. I would suggest checking ignition timing at TDC, camshaft timing and then make sure the wastegate is working properly.

Have been playing with the tune and the car seems to be going quite good now, with only a few very small tune issues to sort.

Have kept the tune on the safe side for now, but i still feel this engine could have more to offer if ever want to push it a bit more.

Went to a Test & Tune to see how it is going but suffered from traction issues in 2nd gear, after heaps of runs and with having to back off due going sideways at half track, my times seemed to go between 15s and high 12s (LOL), however, i was still crossing the line @ 118 MPH just about every run.

I decided to short shift 1st & 2nd and drive through 3rd hard and see if i could at least crack one part of my 1/4 mile goal (120 MPH)

To my surprise i managed to run a 12.2 @ 124.9 MPH ( just over 200 KPH ! ) :bliss: still not the ET i was after (11.9), but the MPH shows that my tune must not be too far off the money at least.

Willowbank is the only place i seem to have a real big traction issue, i am still determined to to get it into 11s on the 185 tyres :fool: , so next im thinking about getting a dual stage boost controller, so i can run lower boost 1st & 2nd at the track ?

You can set an eboost2 to do that automatically or you could just use a regular 2 stage bleed valve and flick the switch manually.
118mph tells me that you have about 450rwhp.

eboost2 very nice, and i know they hold/control boost a lot better etc, but $800 for something i only wan't for track days and id end up mounting in my glovebox (out of sight) does not excite me to much at this stage.

I was thinking of using a Turbosmart Duel Stage (bleed type), and i already have a series of micro switches set up on my shifter, one for each gear (old water/methanol set-up) ,so i can use them to automaticly trigger the boost controller instead of using the manual missle switch. :joystick:

I ran an 11.4 @119mph with a 1.8 60 footer last weekend for the time first at the drags in my rb30'd Torana. Aiming for 10's next time out still on pump fuel. I only got two decent runs in and it was breaking down up the top of third so there is abit left in it.

Glad to hear that yours is coming along nicely as well. Keep fiddling with it and you will achieve your goals...

Congrats Dean, you must be happy with those numbers mate, very well done, your time seems about right for your MPH id have thought ?

Yeh, I dream of getting into 11s (LOL), my stupid goal is more of a personal thing..... :Headbang2:..... although,"in theory" (with slicks, perfect run), with a 400M terminal speed of over 200KPH my car "should" be cabable of high 10s on paper ? (must be that real sticky paper i guess )

To be honest i never thought it would ever do such decent MPH over the 1/4, so im very happy it can get to that speed, especially when im running a restricted exhaust (with a real CAT) and all the other little performance inhibiting things i have left in place in all my efforts to make it legal and a sleeper.

For my own reasons, i wish to run the car "exactly" as it is driven on the street in every way (including running on the 185s) even if that means i only run 12s, it seems these days when people say "street trim" they do not actually mean, the exact way they drive it on the street , for some, i think street trim means they had number plates and a rego sticker on the car when they ran !

My pet hate is those people that say "my street car runs" whatever time, but neglect all the facts, such as.....oh yeh...... i ran slick tyres, dropped the exhaust, no air cleaner, took a headlight, spare wheel & the back seat out, ran C16 or a fuel addative etc etc......:rolleyes::rolleyes:

hahahaha I understand what you mean... There are a number of people that like to think their car is a street car. I was running slicks and front runners. and dropped abit of the exhaust because I thought if I'm going to the drags I might as well have a go, no point taking a knife to a gun fight, but that is just me and we obviously that different goals. My car is starting to turn into more of a street registered than a street car these days anyways, but I still take it out for a cruise every now and then.

I supplied some A/V gear for a show that just so happend to have a Dyno comp, it also "just so happend", that a mate drove my car to the show and it somehow "accidentally" got stuck in the queue :spoton:

So Yeh Waz, 400hp on 185s :) ..... spose i can understand how that may appear just a "little" bit crazy .......:dontknow:

Next track day for me will be the GMH-Torana drag day on the 28th, if you are going up we can catch up then ?

Sold the 186 engine ages ago Matt, ran 107mph in the UC, the dude that bought it was going to get put in a LJ with bigger (unrestricted) exhaust, fat tyres etc

Never heard how fast it ended up going with his set-up, but i think he mentioned a bigger carby and NOS......

Hey mate I'd heard of your car years ago from friends of friends when I was just a youngun playing with my Turbo 173!

Absolutely love what you've done, makes me wish I went with an RB but I suppose I just liked the challenge of playing with another turbo 202, except this time it's a little more serious. Might have to have a turbo Torana meet up at Munchies in the next few weeks hey?

And 400hp on 185's sounds fun...I'm juggling just on 300hp on 175's, still needs some more boost though! =D
