As a few of you will already know, mums taxi did not make it up to Powercruise due to a unfortunate transmission failure the night before.

This is the first time ive had to get the car towed, (cost me $130) so i suppose it was lucky it happend only a few K's away from home and not up at Ipswich.

For those that don't know what the inside of a Auto gearbox (Trimatic) looks like, this is the output shaft and gear case (with planet gears) as they would normally live inside the gearbox , the long shaft is the bit that protrudes from the back of the gearbox (Far Left of pic... Tail shaft connects to this spline)

Below is what mine looked like, snapped away clean (instant neutral, lol)

My auto guy said he suspected (due to varing dis-colouration) a stress fracture "may" have already existed contributing to the break, regardless of that, i guess its more than 10 years old ,and been living behind Turbo engines for most of its life (not to mention putting over 400HP through it) so i spose i can't complain tooooo much about the fragile little Traumatic having a hernia once in a while :<_<:

While the box was apart it got up-graded with some new clutches/bearings etc so "hope" it will be trouble free again for a while, at least untill i can pay back the Credit card bill anyway !

So there is no way of strengthening that component? I'm guessing that part of the box is just how it came out of the factory?

hey im not the only one having transmission problems, i bet your trimatic has gone through hell haha least it held up for a while. i bet u would be pumping out quite a lot of torque with the RB30T.

Yes Nathan, at least my box was old, not brand new like yours, very dissapointing for you im sure (have you got it sorted now ?) ,the faster you go the more you break ,the more you spend.

I asked that question Heath, aparently a bearing runs either side of the area that snapped so can't be beefed up due to clearance issues.

He (auto guy) said no stronger performace bits are available to replace the bit that broke ,he did suggest i could maybe get custom bits made, started talking billet (big dollar) stuff so we thought just give it a go with a "newer" (newer as in less stressed) part ?

People say they can get tri's to handle up to 600HP (flywheel) so i assume they have to use the same part i broke ?, but as per Nathan's comment its NOT the HP as much as the Torque that breaks the gearbox.

HP alone will not be the only culprit, traction and load plus torque all play a big part in failures, i had a full tank of fuel +3 passengers and all the stuff i was taking to powercruise ,so the car was "heavy", the tyres did not spin (that i know of) and not sure how much torque, but id bet the RB makes more than a lot of V8s would, then slam it back to first and nail it doing 40Ks = Tow Truck

Well yeah it's obviously torque, and more importantly, the way that it is supplied lol. It's not gonna happen from rolling onto throttle, it'll be from slamming gears.

By the sounds of your history with the gearbox, a less exercised (newer) part should cope okay

Yea its pretty disapointing, i dont know when ill get it back. they have to pull it out and thats a pretty big job and there not sure what the problem is. its a worry too as im used to doing everything myself. its weird somone else working on it. you probly have more torque then my stroker chev. hopefully your new shaft will hold up for another 10years.

So ill have to try and control myself a bit then :D

Yeh, at least thats what im gonna keep telling myself anyway :spoton:

I think its better if the auto place does the fit/removal ,very annoying if the box has ongoing "issues" and you have to remove/fit yourself (and buy fluid etc) each time, at least if it stuffs up, they will have to supply labour etc for free (well id hope they would)

Just go back to the standard old holden 6 that will fix your problem, there almost as powerful (lol). That way I can win my mars bar back!

I'm impressed your gearbox lasted as long as it has. Have you thought of trying another box like a glide or th350/400? I know its a pain in the ass as your car is set up for the trimatic, but it may be a good investment over time your engine is crunching out some serious power.

When are you back on the road??? I'm thinking of going to willowbank for the t and t this coming Saturday if your keen?

Ha -ha, you should have claimed a win by "default" Waz :tease:

If my gearbox man would have said that no way is my box going to handle my driving, i would maybe have to look at a change to a different box.

For a lot of reasons i still like my tri for now, t350 is a bit to heavy, if i go glide its big dollars to get a box built from scratch, and may need to change diff gears to suit as the taller first gear will not be benificial with a big turbo, then add conversion bellhousing ......then id have to sell the car to pay for it all

Finished putting gearbox in 11.30 last night, seemed good today :spoton:

Might be keen for willow, depends on how my drive friday night goes ?

That is quite a strange thing to give way I reckon, I'd go along with the theory that something wasn't quite right there to start with and hope that the new one is better :spoton:

Went up to a Test and Tune tonight and blew my PB and goal ET "out of the water"

Ran 11s all night (5 runs) with the best run a 11.4 @ 128MPH :D my best 60 foot was still only 2.041 but i did not have a traction problem off the line so could push a 1.9 yet ?

Posted Image

I would have been very happy with 11.9s running real street trim (on 185 wide tyres) so wrapped with 11.4s , still not reving out first gear tho due to the little tyres.

Should have some in car footage of one of the runs up when i get time. :spoton:

Yeh i know what you mean Mr-T, i won't be attempting to go faster any time soon, im already crossing the line @ faster MPH than a lot of 10 sec cars do !

A quick look at the timeslip page http://www.gmh-toran...p?autocom=times and i can see ill have the second fastest "speed" across the finish line

Lucky the need to obtain a ANDRA licence/tech go off ET instead of terminal speed i guess. :D

A while ago Heath, on my street tune it made 408HP ATW, i have replaced the fuel pump since then and the car does seem a little better, i will try to get it on the rollers again the next Dyno show i do.

I have not pushed the eng to see just how much i can get out of the RB , the Turbo is not running in its efficiency range yet and the fuel system is far from maxed out yet so i think it could make more HP without to much drama, i think the rest of the car will let me down if i push any more HP. :<_<:

To be honest im more than happy with the way it goes now, ive way surpassed my goal of 11.9 @ 120 MPH running on 185s, and the engine behaves like a late model car, doesn't get hot in traffic and is good on fuel for a now 11 sec car.

Just need a paint job now ! :D

In car vid of the slowest run out of the 5 (only one i got on wed) , its a bit shakey due to the dodge camera mount i set up.

This run i had to back off due to slight sideways action ,you can hear the blow me off valve on closed throttle, but still ran a 11.9.

Thanks guys,

Waz, i put the camera on a tripod ,2 tripod legs on the back floor ,1 leg on the rear seat, then put a occy strap around the front passenger seat (and the top of the tripod) to stop it from falling over.

If you look close at this pic borrowed from another forum, you can just see the camera through the LHF window (just above the seatline)

This mount is less than ideal, as the back rest part of the front seats can move/vibrate a fair bit making the images shake, i think it would work better if you could use another occy strap from a rear seatbelt to "pull" the seat backwards tight ?

Got to do a power run on the Dyno again @ the Old Skool Event (made a bit more HP), this time had a camera handy, so put some footage on the tube.

Was hoping to have my exhaust fixed up and get a new muffler on before this run (didn't happen,) , this muffler is about 10yrs old, so a new one may be even quieter without hurting HP i hope ?

Top gear (3sp Auto) rev to 7000rpm......

I will enter a pic of this dyno graph printout in the timeslip section.

Wow! 11.4 @ 128 is awesome!

With that MPH, you should be getting closer to 10's!!!! What tyres do you run in the drags? Please don't say those 13's LOL
