The earliest examples that I can find with the engine number recorded are:
Brisbane 30/6/71
Adelaide 5/7/71
I am almost certain that a wooden gearshift knob has never been a standard fitting.
Hope this helps

Did the 173 LC GTR have a WW2?

Yes the late LC GTR also used the same head, carby, headers etc. as the 2600S. The additional capacity resulted in an additional 5hp (130 compared to 125).
From another thread:
If you are looking for a LC GTR carby the numbers to look for are...
23-3041 = 161S GTR
23-3048 = 173S GTR

Although there is one small mention in AMC on page 41.
It would be interesting to find out if anyone has an LC Parts Catalogue printed between July 1971-January 1972 for the 173 for the LC GTR and they could find any differences in parts Nos for a LC Parts Catalogue for the 161, ie camshaft, head nos, manifolds etc as it was mentioned above the difference in Carby nos is noted.
I also wonder for anyone who reads this post who may have a copy of, Modern Motor or Wheels or other car magazine I would say from around May - August 1971 that might have published an article on the revised LC GTR getting the newer engine and any other changes??
I know we have covered, what makes an 71, 72 or 73 Bathurst XU-1 to death but there is very little information on the LC GTR with 173, therefore I think I will post a new thread, What makes a LC GTR Jul 1971.
It would be interesting to see if they are any other notable differences besides engine sizes???

Also in the advert as originally mentioned in the first post a new rocker cover sticker was added all black with 2850 in red with an S in front of the Oil Cap and plain chrome carby cover.
If anyone has access to NASCO Accelerator Magazine during the period of Jul 1971 - Jan 1972 there maybe be information on the LC GTR in there

Has some interesting holden part numbers relating to the 2600s 2850s and 186x
Camshaft :
2600s - # 7428531
186x - # 2815739
2850s & 186x (stamped XH) - #2823364
Head complete :
2600s 9.2:1 CR - # 2807144
2850s 9.4:1 CR - # 2820514
186x - # 2824280
Crankshaft assy are the same on the 2250, 2600 & 2850 only difference quoted is auto or manual
Inlet manifold :
2600s - # 7434447
2850s - # 7433690
Air cleaner assy :
2600s - # 2810338
2850s - # 2820464
Exhuast manifols :
2600s 2850s & 186x front - # 7433655
2600s 2850s & 186x rear - # 7430583
Exhuast pipe and resonator assy :
2600s 2850s 1 3/4" O.D. - # 2810318
Interesting with the muffler assy because the 186x could have had a "seperate tail pipe" , "forked tail pipe" or Twin tail pipes" and the 2600s & 2850s share the same mufflers.
I've never really sat down and studied this book except for the stuff i was chasing but it is an interesting read.
I might be opening a can of worms but if there's a number someone is after I'll have a look when i can

what I've noticed with the parts catalogue is...
The part number listed isn't always the one on the car...
eg inlet manifold 2600S 7434447 was a replacement part number.... not what the 2600S had from factory.
it gets kinda tricky...
7433677 is what my 173S inlet manifold says. I think it is the right one. This could, however, have been changed over the years. Does anyone know??

I have'nt looked at my 2600s to see whether it has the right parts, I'll start to rebuild it in the new year.
I'll be on the hunt for a grill badge, which going by the part numbers is the same as the other 3. I do have an LJ GTR grill badge so maybe a swap will get me out of trouble.

I'm pretty sure that the 186X ( or 3100X ) had a single piped muffler assembly which I know is different to the 2600s and the 2850s GTR's.
Does anybody know the part number for the 3100X mufflers ???
Calling Dr Terry ???????

muffler assy - separate tail pipe # 2816104
muffler assy - forked tail pipe # 2810323
muffler assy - twin tail pipes # 2823707
but it lists only one part number under Pipe - Muffler Tail
Would have been interesting to see what these items looked like as there arent any pics for the 186x exhuast

Hi Kev,
Here is the third Muffler #2823707:-
the parts book lists 3 different items under muffler assy for the 186x
muffler assy - separate tail pipe # 2816104
muffler assy - forked tail pipe # 2810323
muffler assy - twin tail pipes # 2823707
but it lists only one part number under Pipe - Muffler Tail
Would have been interesting to see what these items looked like as there arent any pics for the 186x exhuast
