I have a quote from Giant killers 1975 posted in the HTC newsletter in 1999. It reads L34 standing 400m elapsed time of 13.2 seconds with a final drive of 2.78 1. ( PUT A MORE SUITED CENTER IN IT YOU HAVE GOT 11 SECOND 400M PASSES-EDITOR.
Conservative hp of L34 was 350. It weighed 69 pounds more and had double the hp of XU1. Dream on. The L34 was that dominant it debuted in 74 and the motor was still used in the so called A9X which was never as dominent as the L34 Which after a couple months from release was 6 laps in the lead at bathurst still managed 2nd 3rd and 4th. 75 got 1st 2nd 3rd 76 got first 7 places. No one got to get them so no public following ensued also they were such a weapon Holden just kept it to themselves for fear of media backlash. Have a nice dY.

You're quoting hp & performance figures of Group C prepared race cars.

These differ drastically from the stock road cars on which they are based.

I think that you're opening a 'can of worms' to suggest that A9X was less dominant than an L34.

Unless I am mistaken, the XU1 continued to be relatively competitive against the L34s during 74 (cant remember the driver but I recall reading a praticular driver sticking with the xu1 as lap times were not much greater in the l34 in the early days). After development of the L34 however, it was chalk and cheese, I know...

This whole thread fails to take into account the drastically improved HJ 308 as fitted to LH from later in 1974. And then into early LX with proper 2" twin system. If you find the original Wheels road tests of early LX you'll find both Robbo and whomever the other tester was said that this thing is a supercar, or words to that affect, almost as quick as the unhobbled HT and HG GTS350.

over the last few years I've taken 2 road going L34'S to the track to run over the quarter..

in 2011 on torana forum drag day I took my track pack or HO pack as some like to call it 780 holley, crane roller rockers, solid lifter cam,h&m headers with street extensions, oil cooler etc 3.08 ratio diff radial tyres

making a genuine 343hp on the engine dyno,.I drove the car off the line like was driving of the traffic lights with no wheelspin and ran 13.4@ 107mph through the traps in 3rd gear quite easily..

and no full well if I was keen I could have gone much quicker but the fear of breaking a puny banjo diff wasn't a nice thought or the carrot stick axles..

last year I raced my stock L34 with a fresh engine rebuild with factory rochester and h&m headers and street extensions and 2 and quarter exhaust system,..engine made 290hp again 3.08 ratio diff.athought

this I was extremely aggressive with the car and ran 13.7@103mph again running through the traps in 3rd gear,..and on 2 occasions I managed to run speeds of 106 and 105 mph with a bit of aggression..

both cars were run M21 gearboxes..

I'm not surprised with those figures either. GMH had a history of taming/hobblibg their homologation cars given to the press, it was when journalists got hold of cars not destined for the press where the real story became apparant. The HT was done to hide it from the competition, the L34 probably due to the recent supercar scare.

Starting to think cantstandguessers is only here to stir things up. Floats in and drags out 9 year old posts, comments and disappears again for months but never comes back to where he has commented. 350HP quoted is certainly for a Group C car, which is what HDT were getting out of the cars at the time. I have that article somewhere.

You have TWO 3.08 L34s?
I bet the original tests by wheels ect were done with 2.78 cars.
