my car is eating Uni joints and the only thing that I can find wrong is the pinion angle is a bit excessive, are there offset bushes that I can use to correct this until I get some adjustable arms?

cheers

Noltec do them - not cheap and I'm not sure how much the offset is.

I bought a set the other day from a place called Car Torque here in adelaide, pretty sure they were $100 a pair. Give them a call, I have a feeling the prices on the website arnt accurate.

What brand uni joints are you using? Is your car an auto?

Check the simple things before spending money on things you don't have to.

if you packed up the gearbox mount would that improve the angle?

The floor would get in the way fairly quickly.

Whiteline also make adjustable upper and lower arms.

KTA104 Adjustable upper $360 ( $325 club discount )
KTA121 Adjustable lower 655mm $297 ( $260 club discount )

The McDonald Bros arms will not fit if you diff has been made using Torana brackets. The Whiteline arms will fit with Torana mounts on the diff.

Whiteline is not owner of Nolathane... or vica versa

I prefer Noltec myself
And Edelbrock upper arms :)

yes it is an auto, the brand is Toyo and it only lasted a bit over 2 weeks but I was doing a lot of kilometres.

lifting the trans mount will make it worse as the pinion is pointing down.
I am pretty sure that my diff actually uses the end of lower trailing arms as the upper mount on the diff so the McDonald Bros. ones should be fine, or the McCormick Father+Son ones that I am probably going to use will be fine too.

for the moment I am looking at relocating the front mount for the lower arms a little bit further forward which should fix things for now

The angle opf the gearbox output shaft and the pinion axis should be paralell. Generally the pionion is pointed upward and the gearbox is pointed downward. If your pinion is pointing too far down lifting the rear of the gearbox will help overcome your problem.

The McDonald Bros arms will not fit if you diff has been made using Torana brackets. The Whiteline arms will fit with Torana mounts on the diff.

I ran into the same problem when I went to fit my Mcdonald adjustable arms. There was nothing on their website to say the arms don't fit standard torana diff mounts. After receivieng the arms I called back within a week and was told the problem was very rare. After being put on hold, the guy gets back on the phone and says I have two options. a ) redrill the mounting hole on the arm 5mm below the original hole. Yeah right as if I was going to do that, b ) Notch the diff mounts to give the arms clearance. No offer of a refund was made.

The Mcdonald arms look very well made, I guess it just depends who answers the phone on the day that makes the difference in the sort of customer service you get.

Once your get adjustable arms you really need a digital level to set the uni angles accurately.

A good article on pinion angles.

Looking at the pictures of the arms it looks to me that the bracket on the end of the arm that goes onto the bush on the diff needs notching/clearencing on the bottom.

I was not prepared to modify the McDonald arms to the extent required for full suspension travel. It was easier to just buy the Whiteline arms.

Hi Makka, Just my 2 cents worth on the subject of pinion angle. I'm running these adjustable upper arms on my torana and i also are getting a similar set made for the bottom to adjust the angel a little more and move the diff back a little bit to accomodate bigger wheelks.

dont the arms need to be offset?
looking at the uc ones, one long edge is straight, whereas the other edge expands about half way through so it goes over the bush on the diff.
or is it just uc/a9x like this?

I think that the LH/X ones are a bit straighter than the UC ones.
I have just fitted some like scottya's ones, dad made them up out of some seamless chromolly that he had lying around.
they seem to have fixed my problem, so far so good!

I am pretty sure the LX and UC upper trailing arms are the same part.

The fact that the rear bracket is offset just means the true arm 'centre' line runs a little diagonally through the arm.

That raises an interresting question though on your arms Makka - how did your dad make the arms to suit the dogs leg arms you had before, I would have thought you would need the bracket at the diff end of the arm welded on at an angle or there would be some twisting of the bushes on the diff housing required to bring the front af the control arm round to where the bracket is on the body?
