186P is standard engine from HK,T,G can't remember if it was still 126 hp or if it went to 130
186S is the engine found in 6 cyl GTS Monaros and a few HR's.
The 'S' has twin exhaust headers, twin barrel stromberg carby with larger A/C, mild cam, slightly larger valves, this was the engine that all 186/202's should have been. Stronger all through the rev range but especially in the top end.
LC GTRs had a 161/173 version of the S
Some people tell you the 'S' had a steel crank, others tell you they all did.

Hi Guys.A 186A is the standard HR engine with single barrel carb.

Yes, a 186A is a standard HR 186 motor.
A 186P is the standard HK/T/G 186 motor.
A 186S is the optional 186 'S' engine for all HK/T/G (except Brougham & GTS 327/350) & is standard fitting for the Monaro GTS in those model series.
The HR 186 'S' motor is stamped 186K. AFAIK the only difference between a 186K (HR) & a 186S (HK/T/G) is the sump & pick-up.
There is no difference in air cleaner size between a 186 'S' & a standard 186.
AFAIK all 186 'S' have a forged steel crankshaft.
To answer tonkstoy's original question, I would use the 186 'S' head, carby & manifolds & build a 202 'S'. You will need the 186 pushrods as well.

While we are on the subject, I keep forgetting which pushrods are longer, 186 or 202. And does somebody know how long the buggers are? I have a box full of them, just need to get around to sorting them out one day.To answer tonkstoy's original question, I would use the 186 'S' head, carby & manifolds & build a 202 'S'. You will need the 186 pushrods as well.

I could be wrong but wasn't the extra webbing introduced with the XU-1?A question about this. I thought 186A's were cast the same way as this 179 below, and 186P's and 186S's were cast as per the other photo. Is that correct, or was the casting changed when the 186 was introduced?
