Hi,

As the topic states I'm hoping to cash in on other people's homework/knowledge!

I will soon have a restored set of nibless rims to fit to my car but need to know the best tyre size/ and brand to fit that is still currently available.

I also have a set of sprintmasters which I am going to fit 205/60-13 Bridgestone G-111's to, but it has been suggested that this tyre might be slightly too large to fit to the 5.5" steel rim??

The car is original so prefer the tyres to look the part as well and must be a 'good' tyre as I drive the car :spoton:

Hoping someone can steer me in the right direction as ultimately that's what I want to do in the Torrie

Thanks for any help

The guys at Nostalgic Tyres (03) 9418 4875
were/are going to do a 13 inch tyre with the factory red stripe.

The beauty is the red line does not cross thru any writing on the sidewall.
I think they will be similar to the Monaro ones they are selling and have the old school look.
Also they are excellent to drive on.

I spoke to them before christmas. Might be worth having a chat to them. Very helpful.
$250 per tyre.

Thanks dpz and rory,

XU-1's didn't have redline tyres, only on GTR's so would prefer a tyre without.

Thanks for that Rory- your old car looks ace, don't know how you parted with it.

To be honest I didn't particularly want to have different size/type tyres on the two sets of wheels. Swapping between them could be a recipe for disaster.

Cheers,

Mine has 175/70 x 13" on the original 5.5" inch rims. From what I could find this is very close to the original tyre size. Some use 185/70 x 13" which are a little baggier and look good, and less like cheese cutters.

These are the 175's on mine. I look the look of the redwalls, even if they're not factory

I was using 205/60 x 13"'s on Sprintmasters and since swapping over the cars handling has changed dramatically for the worse, very understeery and nowhere near as agile. You can actually feel the sidewall moving under you.

I run 205/60 R13 on my sprintmasters no worries (lowered LJ). Not too sure on tyre size for nibless rims though

The original XU1 LJs were shit handlers with the stock rims and tyres..I had a good pic of the tyre nearly rolling off the rim...205s and 6" rims with some spring changed totally changed the cars handling...as you found out.

I though the orginal size was 175/75R13s? Thats what my stockes have on them... Arrows 75s.

I also found going from 175s on 5.5 inch rims to 205s on 6 inch rims makes a heap of difference to handling.

The xu1s handle better with the sprintmasters is it from the weight of the wheels or quality of tyre ?

Everyone i have spoken with say they handle like crap with the steel wheels and awsome with the sprintmasters

The Sprintmasters sit noticably further out in the guards. I have notice this when changing the wheels around. I would suggest the wider track the Sprintmasters give makes the car more stable in cornering.
