Help please..

My VN cranks slow sometimes like it has a flat battery then secands later it starts fine..

Now i have changed starter motor, battery, Earth cable to motor and still the same..

When i put a new Earth on the motor to the battery it was fine for 3 months now its back to being a basterd..

The only thing i havnt changed yet is the main battery lead goind to the starter, could this be at fault...

John

edit: its a V6 auto if that helps, series 1...and alternator is new and charges fine..

Sounds like connection to me , whether battery terminals or lead connections. Also try swapping start relay for horn relay as a test.

what about the contacts on your key...use a little but of steele wool to rub the key contact and the strip around the barrel.

New battery terminals, new battery(2 of em), new earth lead to motor(old one still in place new one on top), cleaned all contacts 467 times and i thought it was fixed every time till it did it again.. Very frustrating...

The key on the VN doesnt have contacks.. Has a small switch behnd barrel...

What leaves me to beleive its not the Ign switch behind the barrel is that it came good for 3 months when i replaced the earth leed.. Now i used a jumper leed from batter to earth and it would crank propper, take jumper off and it cranked slow, that was 3 mnonths ago.. now its doing it again..But this time by useing a jumper leed as a better earth dont do shit..

Thanks for the help guys its realy appreciated

It definitely could be the positive cable running from your battery to the starter motor. From memory they are not that thick of a cable anyway so any deterioration will lead to poor performance (slow cranking of the engine).

I suggest replacing the positive cable with 4AGW cable. Less resistance, less heat and better current flow to your starter should solve the problem of the slow cranking. I'd also replace the earth cable with the same 4AGW if you haven't already.

As for cleaning your ignition contact, or swapping the starter relay with the horn relay, well it should have no bearing in the result. The fact that the engine is turning over, although slow, suggest that the starter solenoid is receiving +12V from the ignition (or ECM) so the starter relay is fine. If the engine didn't turn over at all, and then started fine then perhaps the ignition system maybe at fault.

Hope this helps. B)

ALL FIXED...

Im a happy man and your right antelopeslr5000 the relay and contacts were fine..

I had already eplaced the earth as mentioned...

Turns out it was the starter motor poleing...One minute it would work the next it would crank slow... I put a multymeter on the battery and it mesured 12.3V and when the key turned and it cranked slow to almost a stop it was dropping the battery to 7V.. This showed the power lead was sending current to the starter or else it wouldnt drop the voltage so much...

Anyway Reco starter $100 and the car is humming like a bird again...

Thank you all for all the help it was greatly appreciated..

forgive my ignorance, what is "poleing", is it a particular type of short in the starter?

yes mate, its when the starter shorts thru the bearing too earth.. from the armature wiring i think thru the bearing to earth..

Thats the quick explanation i was given from my mate who is a Qualified machanic..

Sorry but the relay can be at fault if it is not supplying fill 12v to solenoid due to dirty contacts. It can patially engage the solenoid contacts thus not supplying full battery voltage to the motor.

I would have suggested polling but the original post states "replaced starter"
