Hi to all members

I am in the process of converting a 9 inch to fit in a Lx . I am going to copy a banjo that has come out of an LX and keep the same width . My question to members is how long do I have to cut my axles as the centre is offset and one axle is longer than the other compared to our little banjos.

Cheers

Thankyou V8SLRtorana and makka .V8slrtorana that is exactly what i wanted . Are they 28spline axles ? I will be using the tapered roller bearing set up like yours as I have bought a pair of axle tube ends from Mcdonald Bros to suit my HQ drum brakes .

V8slrtorana ,you wouldn't have a photo of your housing so I can get an idea of how far you offset the centre section.

all the best

28 spline axles yes.
Tapered roller = holden = easier. You can switch from torana drums, to hq drums to commodore discs on that bearing setup.
Ford solid roller = headache.

Thanks v8slrtorana

are they salsbury axle tubes spigoted into the 9" housing ? Looks like a neat job .
I got my axle tube ends from Mcdonald bros today and now I will chase down tubing with a 70mm ID . Hopefully I can find tubing around that size with a 5mm wall . In that case I will have 80mm OD . I might post some pics when it is coming along .

An easy way to modify a 9inch to suit is to use 2 short XC axles, cut the long axle tube to length machine the bearing end to slip back in and weld up.
The center of the diff will be offset as well as the tail shaft but doesn't foul the tunnel. change to torana or hq stud pattern, use the ford brakes and HG drums.

slr6000 , are you saying to use both short axles fron an XC? If so do you need to offset the centre ?

yeah looking at the diff from the back the centre will be over the the right by 100mm. The tail shaft wont be in the centre of the tunnel but on an angle.

To get all the brackets right I made a jig up using a standard diff, but moved the upper control arm mounts higher as the ford housing is larger than a banjo housing.
Then dropped the 9 inch in and weld up.
I found shortening the easy part, getting the brackets done took a bit of work.

Thanks to all of you blokes who have given me advice . My 9" is coming along and I am up to fully welding the tubes and then tacking the hangers so I can fit it to the car for a little dummy run. If anybody has done this before and has any good ideas please feel free to pass them on . Thank lads.

looking good
heres a link that shows an alignment fixture to make sure you get it all straight. You have to watch out for distotion when welding it all up.

Another thing to get right is the pinion angle, you can work it out using an angle finder like this one.

Also a good idea to weld in some filler and drain plug bungs.

yeah thanks slr6000 . I have not welded it yet because i'm a bit scared of the angles and stuff . I'm using the moto measure twice and cut once ,or in this case weld once . Also does anybody know where I can get the top brackets that are on this 9" in Ebay ? Will they fit my LX arms ?

Those brackets on the ebay diff are cut off old trailing arms, they don't look all that strong to me. i use the original brackets and weld plates on the outside to support them. heres a pic to show you how i go about it. Bit more work in it but i think its worth doing.

another tip.
when you set up the top bracket closest to the centre,
make sure you can still get the bush in.

I also put the drain plug off to one side so it doesnt get knocked about.

slr6000 I was liking the idea of those top brackets because of the height you can get out of them ,but your idea is better because they dont look as strong .
Arrimar I am tossing up wether to put a drain plug in but if I do I was thinking exactly that.
cheers lads keep em coming in
