I'm just in the process of fitting the right hand exterior mirror on my LC GTR. Just wondering if anyone has any detailed photos of the door, and the location of the mirror? I've seen the mirror mounted below, on, and above stripe. I'm guessing it goes above the stripe and is viewed through the 1/4 'flipper' window. Any ideas?
Thanks guys.

This is where I put mine.
The car had an aftermarket mirror on it when I bought it, I just used the holes that were already in the door.

I think that the position varied over time and model - perhaps random or different from factory to factory. These are original pics of the day which show them well back. My '69 GTR had it mounted well back, but I have pics of LC XU-1s with the stem mounted way forward as in the post above.

As I suggested - they are all over the place.
If I recall correctly - when they are fitted way forward, they can be fitted without removing the door trim. Maybe GMH changed the assembly line later or perhaps they were put on at different times depending on the factory.

Already have the trim off. The repro 'Rare Spares' model has a philips screw that obviously tightens from behind the trim - not too sure how you'd be able to fit it without removing the trim. I might use a bit of Loctite on the threads too - don't want to pull the trim off too many times! The handles (and horseshoe clip) are new and can be a bugger - even using the 'rag' trick, and the 'you beaut Holden Special Tool'.
Thanks all.

Seems there isn't really a 'rule of thumb' so I placed it in a place that made it easy to use. I found the window runner was in the way if viewed whilst sitting in the drivers seat if I placed it closer to the back of the door, or lower. Anyway, it looks fine and is kinda easy to view in this position.

my car has spent part of its life as an xu1 with the lj mirror but i uncovered the lc holes just below the door edge body line making the mirror positioned on the thin stripe so thats where i left it

From what I can see from all the above pictures, is that all early cars (sales brochures, TV adds etc.) have the mirror positioned in a full forward position & below the crease line. This is same as HD/HR & HB & is easy to fit without removing the door trim. This was probably not that good to see through, with the 1/4 vent divider blocking the view, as gtr2600s has said.
Many (possibly later) pictures show it mounted higher up, maybe leading to better visibility.
Remember, the hole has to be punched or drilled in a certain position, before painting, so it's not just at somebody's whim. A factory change on a fixed date, perhaps. I will have a look thru my old service bulletins.
