Gday all, as the title says whats the differance in looks between a v8 and 6cyl starter motor. Ive got a starter motor in the shed and have no idea what its off. It has two mounting bolts that go in at 90 degrees across the shaft. One bolt is about twice as long as the other. Im hoping this is out of a V8 as mine is playing up and Ive never had it out of the car so I dont know what it looks like :fool: . Cheers Steve

Gday Obey 1 That photo is almost identical to the one Ive got, both bosch units, mounting points are the same as is the end that goes into the bell housing. Just slightly different where the solenoid joins the main body. Is there any differance with a starter in an auto to a manual. Just have to test it to see if it works. Thanks Obey 1 for your help. Cheers Steve. :D

Useless bit of infomation 1#
The "motor" in the starter assy of both the v8 and 6 are the same.
IE, if you burn out your v8 starter, you can fit the v8 soliniod to the 6 cylinder motor and have a v8 starter again. Or vice versa. So start collecting 6 cylinder starters :spoton:

Im pretty sure they are both the same (auto/manual).
If you are going to change it jack your car up and remove the passenger side tyre as I find this more comfortable sitting on my back side than lying on my back trying to remove the wiring. Two wires will be bolted together on the starter(your main feed from your battery and the main supply to your cars electricals) and there will be one that plugs in.Thats the one that triggers the starter.Take note where the one plugs in as there is two terminals on my starter and I got that wrong and it didn't start !! DOH !@!
Then crawl under and undo the two bolts from underneath.
WORD OF WARNING ..Dont forget to disconnect your Battery positive FIRST or you will get a spectacular light show ..Spark.Spark !!
GOOD LUCK with it

VN to VS are different auto and manual, think all earlier ones are interchangeable.

Thanks all, bolted in the other starter and alls good. Found the terminal part on the solinoid of the one in the car is loose and cant do up the screws any more. It looks like somebody has made up some gastkets to take up space. I can get the old starter rebuilt for about $150. Cheers all Steve.
