Thats because those great looking driving lights on the L31 make it go faster....Note the L34 is slower over the quarter

The SLR5000 in factory trim had a standard eight , where the L34 had the big valve heads , cam , roller followers , Holley carb , twin point dizzy
Hey Steve, slow down on the old updates with half baked info, first holden from the factory with roller followers was the VS and no holden ever had a twin point dizzy factory fitted.
L34 had roller rockers along with twin coil dizzy if thats what you mean.

I guess we all have to have our share of humble pie at some stage.

to see the Qrt Mile time on the Car that Harry Firth was building for the 1972 Bathurst main race,
i reckon a 13 sec Qrt Mile time on the V8 LJ XU-1, And going off the Pink LJ XU-1 V8 that HDT Hotted up
and what Ian Tate says about it in the AMC Mag story on the V8 XU-1 issue 9.

This picture shows ONE SET OF POINTS PER COIL, please explain how that makes this a twin point dizzy???I guess we all have to have our share of humble pie at some stage.

There are different types of 'twin point' distributors, after all the title just means that the dissy has 2 sets of points & the overall aim is to increase dwell time. This picture shows ONE SET OF POINTS PER COIL, please explain how that makes this a twin point dizzy???
The very common Mallory 'YL' dissy has 8 lobes with 2 set points which overlap & drive a single coil. This style increases dwell to 32+ degrees but still demands that the coil deliver 400 spark pulses per engine revolution @ 6,000 RPM. A standard V8 dissy, by comparison only has 26-28 degrees dwell.
The L34 style of twin points only asks each coil to deliver 200 pulses per rev (@ 6,000 RPM), the same rate as a 4-cyl, because there are only 4 lobes. The other advantage is less chance of 'points bounce'. Also with only 4 lobes on the dissy shaft, dwell can exceed 40 degrees.
I believe that in the pre-electronic ignition days, this was the superior V8 ignition system.

Because the road going L34 DID NOT get the HO pack in general - i.e. the 780 Holley etc.Why did all those apparent engine improvements of the L34 still not allow it to be quicker then the L31 over the 1/4?
It was just an L34 block with the Rochester on top (yes that's not 100% correct, but that's the idea).
With the High Output (HO) pack it was a fair whack more powerful.
