If using VHT Chev Rocket Orange (it's actually red). Gearbox cenre bit only, bell housing and tail are silver. VHT Holden Rocket Red to too red.

Power Plus Holden Rocket Red Engine Enamel also gives the right colour.

Below is the VHT product.

Do a search, just incase I've got the wrong VHT paint, as there has been a thread on this previously. Can't find the can to confirm, but it may have been Chev Rocket Red. Not sure now.

The best match for the original Holden red available in a spray can is motorspray Holden Red. The bellhousing and rear of the gearbox are aluminium, the centre section is very close to red oxide, so close in fact if you put it against an original, you can't see a difference.

Hay sandman just painted mine today. I used VHT rocket red. The pics look more red than it actually is, the photos are off a mobile phone. At the time of choosing the paint my engine builder was also painting a 350 Chev with the VHT orange. The rocket red was a much closer match then the Chev orange to the original Holden colour.

for the alloy parts i have found the best results buy steamcleaning then prepsol wash and spray with flat aluminium spray can. but dont put it on to fat, or you will ruin the natural look. just enough to get uniform color then i use a spray can clear over that. same rule as above. just enough to cover, then leave it alone. also before you paint go right over each piece and knock the sharp edges off. i have used this method for years and i swear by it . f##k see.

That Holden Rocket Red is the one I think is too red. Think it is HR or earlier rocket red. No offence Lxrana.

With the cast aluminium, I've tried all sorts of things, including cleaning it all up and clear coating. The best result was obtained, IMO, with VHT Heat Proof Silver.

For an authentic restoration don't paint the cast aluminium. It comes up nicely with a sandblast, then leave it alone (same with inlet manifolds). Also, as stated above, red oxide primer is the go for the cast iron centre section of the gearbox.

I keep reading all these "try this and try that "methods on engines, trim and all other facets of restoration on your cars . But quite simply there is only one way to restore a car and thats the same way the factory did , not how your mates tell you or how you heard from joe blow. If you follow this mentality you will have your car looking as it should first time every time . Its not always about money either , its time and patience . Rocket red i mix to the original formula on a 40 year Dulux Barrel type tinting machine and resell it , and it looks nothing like what all these companies try and sell you . These companies mix their colour from an old engine that has lost all its colour pigments, and it seems now most other companies have copied the same formula .
Rocket red is actually an orange not red colour or pink like these spray packs are . Motospray and VHT (which used to be good ) are poor quality and have poor adhesion and durability . You need to use the what the factory used which is what i sell in spraying enamel and spray it out of a gun using Dulux/PPG the original paint manufacturer . Even their quality has wained quite a bit over the last 10 years to compete which is annoying . As for the gear box centre body i sell that all also and the correct colour is called "Special red "(looks like red oxide). As for your bell housing water jet /vapour blasting is the best and only method to give it the proper factory look . Sandblasting makes it look dried out and hardens like panel steel and seems to upset the properties of the metal for good . Hope this helps restorers . Cheers James 03 9505-6404

well said, I totally agree, the mateasaurus and show circuit have a lot to answer for. The local paint shop here has all the original dulux paint codes "rocket red" "350 silver""Dark Dove Grey", all end up looking mint and at least not glossy and bling looking, you only have to look at original pictures etc to see what they really looked like, as for the gearboxes, I have used a red oxide for the 70-74 range , then they came out it seems in reds etc, a lot more in commodores it seems.
The alloy used to come up mint in a Trichlorethylene bath, prob very enviro illegal now, so the next best thing is "Soda Blasting" doesn'y give it that destroyed dull look of sand blasting
