I was looking at Nissan Skyline two round lights ,each side . or recessed UC lights then gave the idea away.

they look "fresher" to me... I wonder how black would look though?

Painted black outers would suit too

I thought about the skyline lights, but I dont like the way the indicators are placed, each different skyline model has them in a different spot but they always look a bit ordinary. I liked the idea of the lotus elise lights but I imagine would be rather pricey

I'm going to look at doing the vertical strips and tint the lenses tomorrow if I get time, I have a spare sedan outside thats not worthy so that'll be a good crash test dummy. I'll post pics asap.

Meanwhile keep flickin your ideas up here..

Cheers

The major problem I see with the UC lights is that they are disproportional to the body of the car and are too bright. I think if you made the rear of the car seem taller (spoiler, slim line number plate) and wider (fat tyres), and do as Rodomo did and break them up by painting the recesses they could look ok themselves. But they will still look like tacted on trailer lights to an extent.

I think the Eleanor lights are too long for the UC rear (I've checked). I was looking around and 69 mustang lights seem like they would look good (but I think you would need the rear spoiler and fat tyres) Major problem with the lights though 1, they are ford 2, they have a concave curve and would require modifcation to the lights or the car body to make fit well. You could glass up the lights so they mount flush, or you could add a convex curve to the inside of a UC's back end. Either way in the grand scheme things, I think it would only be moderately difficult.

I think the UC would have to go down in history as having the BIGGEST UGLIEST tail lights ever fitted to a production vehicle.

^ Dam straight, maybe we should enter it in the guinness record books :)

Here is some quick chops for for XB coupe rear lights and 69 stang (dodgy pic). I have no idea if the dimensions of the rear lights are correct.

That could look alright that one... But as you said, depends on the actual size and dimensions of it... I guess the main thing you want are lights that won't be instantly recognisable... Merc/Mustang/Skyline lights will be seen instantly and it will look like you're going for a replica or wannabe or something...

But how does that saying go? You can't polish a turd? LOL

I think any solution has to curve around the sides to be accepted.

If you photoshop out the side bits from an LX, it looks wrong again.

If you photoshop side bits on to the current UC lights,
oh, and swap red for orange (never got why they did that)
it looks reasonable again. Still too big. That's why I think Volvo
lights would work. Smaller, but in keeping with the front end.

JMHO.

I'll do some chops tonight.

When i had a UC i didn't like the tail lights either. But they grew on me. I think some paint on them would do wonders but over all i like them.. Prefer lh lx though.

Can anyone else see the common trend that any half decent chop (no offense to the choppers)is looking like the rear end of a ford Capri???

Haha, yeah - but not my one sunshine!!!

Here are some really quick chops to demonstrate my point regards
the little bits that run in to the side of the quarter.

I left the UC as is, and made the lights go around the corner. They still
look too big, but I reckon they look better.

Posted Image

Now I did the opposite with the LX. Made it UC style - ended the lights
on the rear, with no part of the light going around the corner. Now this
is a hot hatch!!!! But when UC'd it looks pretty wrong.

Comments? These are quick chops people, so not looking for comments
on the quality, just the theory.

Cheers, Leakey

The LX looks good Leakey, the UC lights still look too tall. What happens if you change the front of the UC? =) Nothing a little fibreglass work and some time can't change: 146mm narva round headlights, and a custom grill. I reckon backlight work would become more broad in design choice. Either way it does seem (as mentioned before) to become more ford focused.

The black surround is a definate improvement.
Now we just have to find the right colour to paint the internal reflectors.

Just reflecting on my son's reflectors, (pardon the pun  ) I think from memory the paint was "chrome", a touch too bright.

I think I have a spare lens here, I might have a fiddle with different colours behind it and post results.

The front of the UC looks pretty good i reckon... And the like hte buldge already in the bonnet.

This is what my gf and i did on her Bonnet... I reckon it looks shit hot too!

Posted Image

I will have to get a good pic of her painted tail lights... Custom plates also take attention away from the tail lights on the back. As well as Rubber strip chrome bumpers i reckon.

are they white strips (bit of glare from the sun)? Definitely looks cool when you match striping with the body lines!

I think I got some spare UC back lights too Rodomo, might have a fiddle with them - got nothing but time atm. Gotta love uni holidays
